Hi Andrea, Yes its beautiful. It was supplied to our client by a company called David White Fireplaces in York. Its an original range that has been modernised to include two Smeg ovens and an induction hob. Thanks, Charlotte.

we're also in scotland and in a new house (well new to us). it's a victorian semi and although it has gas central heating we've wanted a stove for ever so are getting one fitted at the end of october in our living room. my dad and sister both have them and neither of them but wood. just blown over trees and like (with the council's permission). we'll have to buy our first lot of seasoned wood for this winter but after that are hoping to follow in their footsteps. hope to be able save a bit on our gas bills too.

I don't mind the current colours although a greys and beiges tend to suck light out of a room, a brighter colour rather than just white will help. I agree with much of what Jill says above, with a few tweaks ... the lighting needs attention. The room needs some interest, colour and texture to create depth. Get a larger rug, more colourful, with organic pattern which draws the eye outward. Big enough to sit the furniture on. Pick up some of the colours from the new rug and get some cushions. A couple of plants would help with texture and add life to the room. I know you are using the mirrors to add light and space but the one under the stairs is just reflecting the underneath of the stairs ... try a colourful print of a pathway between trees for example, to draw the eye beyond the room otherwise it's a bit bland. The TV is just on a stand that is too small and a bit low, go for a wider piece or try positioning the unit against the other wall in that same corner so it is facing the sofas, then the TV won't look so out of balance. If you make the room a bit livelier and interesting the light issue won't be such a problem. Consider pale turquoise walls for example rather than just white and add some artwork.

Hi Greg, I think mixing contemporary styling with original features works wonderfully. My personal favourite wood burners are the morso stoves (for example the s50). Of course you need to choose one that meets your heating requirements, but the supplier should be able to help with that. If that one (that has the right output) doesn't legally fit in the existing opening, then you have a problem. You could remove the existing fire surround and enlarge the opening, with maybe a contemporary floating shelf above the new opening, or you could choose a smaller stove and then provide supplementary heating through other means. Is there central heating already in the building? If so then a discrete flush panel radiator should be easy to locate somewhere out of the way. Alternatively you could put in an industrial style radiator below the windows (where they are normally most needed): http://www.bisque.co.uk/products/general-radiators/flow-form If you don't have central heating, you could use a black-body infra-red radiator to top up the heating, which is run on electrics, is energy efficient and has other health benefits. Hi, the only thing I would say is put the fire on and see how hot it gets. We have a gas inserted fire, a little bit like yours but it really belts out the heat. We had an oak mirror on the wall above it and it got so hot we were really concerned that it would burn! We didn't want a full mantel piece so we bought an oak "shelf" to absorb the heat, then put the mirror above that. Now I am not worried about the mirror. I still have to switch the fire off after a couple of hours as the wood "shelf" gets really hot, but I am not worried that anything of value will get damaged. If the shelf gets a bit black (it hasn't so far) I won't mind. I definitely would not put a TV over a fire for all the above reasons. Hope that helps a little.
