Kitchen Dilemma

How can I make this kitchen more appealing? All new cabinets or can I salvage these? The cabinets are very grainy and I think if they were stained or painted the grainy wood would show underneath. Wall color is light mocha. If cabinets are replaced, what would go well with the granite countertop and backsplash behind the stove? As little work as possible would be great because we may be planning to sell in a few years. Hardwood floors are cherry-colored as is the rest of the house. What I hate most is that the kitchen contains top to bottom wood - like I'm in a cabin. Help please? Would appreciate all ideas!

- paint the cabinets some shade of white. bring a sample of the backsplash and counter to a quality paint store and ask for recommendations.
- move the handles for the doors onto the door frame. I've never seen what you have now. big red flag for buyers.
-cabinet above expresso maker needs to be removed. open shelves or find a matching cabinet anything would be more useful than those.
- if you want to go further and the cabinets are in good shape reface them and hang new doors

Thank you for those tips! A shade of white definitely seems like the way to go. I'm not sure what you mean about the cabinet doors - the handles aren't on the door frame? Also, if I remove the cabinets above the espresso machine what should go in it's place? Thanks! :)

We were confronted with similar limitations on a project last year. We achieved a layout which I believe optimises the space available. The distance between the kitchen units was 85-90cm. Please see project here. I believe the key area to address with a small kitchen are: storage - favour drawers opposed to doors and explore which internal storage solutions suit your needs lighting - ensure all areas of the kitchen are well-lit worksurface - provide as large an area as possible; induction hobs and undercount sinks with integrated drainer grooves help handleless door/drawer fronts - if a modern kitchen, I'd suggest going for handleless to avoid catching plinth - repeat the same flooring material as plinth to give the illusion that the base units are floating gaps - avoid; build in units wherever possible - cleaning within the tight space will otherwise be cumbersome

I think the kitchen could be the basis for any style. Your mum could add the style she prefers via a big island, statement breakfast stools/chairs, and open shelf brackets to the left of the window (with objects/books/plants). @Marina Drobot thank you so much for the thoughtful redesign! It's looks fantastic and we're very tempted to follow it with the masses of storage and kitchen space - however we really want the additional living space. We love the idea of the whole overall space being a communal area, and the living space is a big part of that. Your design is very creative and not something we would have thought of ourselves. We're just doing our kitchen in the same theme, Nordic oak island and possibly stone grey colour cabinets for the run. Have you looked at DIY kitchens? They do bespoke colours but without the massive price tag. We're doing this so then we can afford the Nordic oak island which is a silly amount of money but absolutely love it! We had quote from magnet but DIY kitchens was a third of the price!

I think there are two different types of cabinet doors? The handles on the doors above the desk have a frame (moulding around the edge like a picture frame) but the door to the left of the microwave does not appear to. You'd have to do a great patch job if you're going to move the handles.

Why not try to paint before replacing everything? Houzzers have raved about the Rustoleum products.

I think that backsplash is overwhelming because it goes to the ceiling. I'm not sure you should remove it unless you are prepared to replace the drywall!
