I want to replace a spiral staircase with a more conventional one, problem is it is in the middle of the living room.

Not sure how the house is currently laid out to provide any suggestions.

Can you post a floor plan of the house ?

This might be a project for a local architect to help you figure out.........Spiral staircases are small compared to regular stairs and that is why they are used because there usually isn't enough room for a regular stair.

However, a creative genius architect might be able to help..................

String vertical tension cables down from white circle above onto the side of each step (drilled through and secured with bolts) and have one that spirals up those vertical cables (linking each). Although not a fan of spiral staircases, this one is a great centrepiece. To emphasise on this great feature, I would put 3 or 5 LED spotlights/downlights within the white circle above that point towards the steps. I think that will look good. If you are more adventurous paint each steps in tones (i.e red, orange, yellow, white or in green or blue hues - depending on your taste of colour of course) or random multi-colour (green, red, orange, blue, yellow and white).

Advice for staircases carpet or runners?

Hi Maggie. We are doing the same but have been fortunate enough to have an interior designer friend who has given us great advice: - Ground to 1st floor stairs: runner with taped sides and carpet rods. This carpet is different to all of the others and finishes at the top step. -1st floor landing, stairs from 1st to 2nd and 2nd floor landing in a dark grey carpet all the way to the edge as far as possible - better for hiding marks, wear etc. These areas don't 'normally' have runners. - All bedrooms except master are in a lighter grey. - Master bedroom in a slightly more luxurious carpet. I hope that helps a little. I really wouldn't worry about having different carpets on the stairs. The ground floor stairs are normally a little more elaborate as this is what you see on entering the house. Good luck with it all.

Thanks for all your comments. Looks like reprinting is a favourite option, which is less disruptive than a new staircase and a repainted will not destroy our current wallpaper which will be ripped if we fit a new staircase and the paper is no longer available. i attach a better photo of the colour of the wallpaper (it's a gold colour) so that you can help me select best colour. I really don't want white. we plan to replace the doors to a light oak with glass inserts to help lightened the hall and lay cream tiles on the floor. we will probably replace the carpet on the stairs with a similar patterned one

It would be very difficult to design something for you and even more difficult to offer a price, even roughly. This is something that IMO you need a Joinery company to visit you, discuss your requirements and then quote you.

Without no pics i'm flying blind. But here's a pic that be helpful as one flight of stairs is connected to the 2nd one with a large landing. Of course, the landing can be made smaller or larger
