Through room flooring

Hello. Have a huge dilemma over flooring colour in our new house & need help.

Layout: lounge which has bi-folds to the D/Room. The D/Room & kitchen are now open plan with a b/fast peninsula separating them. All pine T&G wood floors.
Kitchen is now contemporary white gloss units with a dark grey wood laminate.

If planned on staining it all in a walnut colour as I love the dark rich browns BUT I'm not sure it now works with the grey/white in the kitchen. So I was thinking grey stain would look amazing in the kitchen - but then not so much in the lounge.

Any advice please? Ie should all the flooring be the same? Is grey a no no? Would dark brown flooring match any decor?? Help!

This is the floor (semi sanded) as it is now. The worktop is called mountain oak and it's a dark grey/black wood effect.
Just not sure if a grey wood stain would be ok through the bottom floor or can I change colours??

New kitchen looks fab and agree pine colour has to go. Gut feel is that grey is a no. Though slate would look lovely so maybe a very dark grey would be ok. Just feels an odd colour to stain interior floors. Wood floors add texture and warmth and contrast can be a good thing! Dark Oak or Walnut would also be more flexible in terms of decor in other rooms. Ideal has to be same colour throughout I think, so maybe pop down to local homebase/b&q and buy some sample boards to look at options in situ. If you're careful with them, can return when choice made. Lime washing is another option though wouldn't get the lovely contrast.

I'd suggest definitely moving to the side. This is our plan too. A neighbour is having it done and it's looks amazing. The open plan living space you gain is worth it!

My suggestion is, before you think about furniture, paint and accessories I would start by creating a colour palette for the room. Usually I would stick to three colours- two primary colours and the third incorporated through accessories such as cushions etc. Once you have your colour palette decided, you need to make one colour your wall colour and if you do go for a feature wall, make sure that colour is consistent with the pattern. Does that room have any windows? I’m unable to tell from the photos. If it doesn’t, I would recommend a white oak brushed laminate flooring. Being as you’re aiming for a modern design, I would keep the colours light. Say your palette was for example white, taupe and black. Perhaps have white walls with a nice feature wall that includes taupe and then accessorise with a nice black gloss coffee table, vase, black and white cushions etc. You could also have white wooden blinds. I would recommend you change the oak doors unless you want a rustic theme, then you could go down the oak road. You could also try painting them white. There’s so many options for your space because the room is such a good size. I would first think what style do I want, what colours do I want and then progress from there. Hi The room size is about 5 meter * 12 meter. I am planning to replace the sofas. One side of the room has bay window and other side’s window will be closing. I am struggling to find what colour of walls or choose 1 feature wall???will go along with the floor and furniture i have chosen.i want gold furniture but confuse about the wall colours and sofa colour and most importantly where to put these things because you can see my living room is long rectangular shape its bit tricky to decide where to put tv,sofas,which sofa shape we can go with either L shape or 3-4 seater etc etc because room got 2 main entrances and third door is going to dinning room,i have uploaded some furniture picture what i have choose and some extra pictures Thanks in advance!

Hi! Thank you for your reply & advice. I'm on a grey fetish this year but realise my walls & bathroom will also feature grey so perhaps flooring will be overkill, ha ha.
I would go dark though if I did - like a smoked warm grey.

Alternatives - a less red tone of brown or a black stain.

Is black just as much a no no as grey or more acceptable?

The house is 60's (looks like a dormer bungalow & not so pretty) so we are going for a cross between classic & contemporary.

I love the black/white/grey look as my neutral pallet as I can add almost any colour to them - but I'm just struggling with browns.

Hi. I'd look around on Houzz, too, and see if there are any of the colour combinations you are thinking of that appeal to you and to rule out what you don't like.

Grey painted floors (or black) can look very cool and dramatic, but if it is just a stain, they can end up looking like laminate. These look great:

Thanks for replying and the images. I love the look of the last one on the first batch of images you posted (gorgeous pattern!) The walnut colour I seem to have for the floor stain looks nothing like this though.

I've taken a few more pics (work in progress) with the bi-folds open. The rooms are quite a good size and fairly light even though the kitchen/diner is north facing.

First pic is with the kitchen behind you (so peninsular in front) looking into the dining area.

2nd is showing the entrance to the lounge

3rd is from in the garden looking into the dining room & lounge.

The kitchen does look good with a lighter floor but we are having white wash floors in the bedrooms so wanted a contrast downstairs. (Plus I couldn't imagine trying to keep a white kitchen floor clean! Eek)

White wash, Scandinavian style, is lovely but - you are right - would be a nightmare in a kitchen unless you just love to sweep and mop :)

From the photos, the pine boards look old and nice and I would just do a natural stain. Grey stain is just a bit funny and will look a bit nothing and maybe even dirty.... Walnut is great, but it should be proper walnut and will suck quite a lot of the light out of the room. If you don't like the natural look (which I think is in keeping with your white washing upstairs, to be honest), you can always stain darker later or paint them a solid grey, but it is much more work to re-sand and go back (as I'm sure you already know because you are mid-sand!).

Yes, sucking the light out is my major concern although the lounge is south facing and it does throw a lot of light into the 2 main rooms - just not the kitchen so much.

I would say I'm going for more of a vintage romantic French style upstairs as the whitewash may turn into more of a denser white, ha ha. Not into the Scandinavian look tbh so wanted to avoid natural pine.

I may then try some medium wood colours - although not my favourite, a medium oak might be just warm enough and also light enough.

Hummm, dilemma dilemma!

Gotcha. Some of the pics I posted above have a medium tone and they look nice with the dark grey and white so go for it. You can always go darker if you really hate it, but I think it'll give you warmth without making it too dark in there. Good luck!

Yes, I've kind of resigned myself to going with a mid tone - as much as I love dark wood flooring. On the plus side, it will mean less cleaning! Ha ha
