Kitchen island dilemma

We have just created a large kitchen area knocking thru a wall which was the family room. However, a 28x16" pillar has to remain. It is where an island has been proposed but it annoys me! How best to work around this pillar? Should I make it a feature? Start the island from it or off to one side? Help please!

I think a 3D rendering would make you feel more comfortable about how it will really look and to help you decide whether it is ok going through the middle or better on the end. If you don't want it in the middle, consider turning the island 90 degrees so that it starts at the pillar but then the long end and the chairs are near the big doors. Your dining area could then be between the kitchen and the family room, as opposed to in front of the doors, where I assume you were going to put it. Good luck!

Hi there,

Is it going to be made in brick? Is that why it's so chunky?
If so, can they not give you a steel option (which we had instead) which was a lot thinner as it's designed to take more weight?

It's hard not to be annoyed, I do understand. However the images bg attached show that you can integrate them into your kitchen without too much interference,

Our kitchen is only small so our pillar was just on the one side. So we built the wall out to the side of it and have a built in shelving space instead now do you don't see a pillar there at all!

Perhaps think creatively about what you can do with it ie feature wine rack wall? Etc etc

Perhaps move the island to the left, so the distance between island and tall units on the left side is about 100 cm and then put something like this over it? You could possibly do that too without moving the island:

If you take the 290 unit off the back run and island, I think that would be sufficient? As you've got kids I think a banquette seat would be ideal for family games, homework, crafts etc. Banquettes are around 60cm, table 90cm so that leaves 113cm which I think is more than sufficient both visually and practically as it's the same gap I have behind my kitchen table. Choose chairs that push under and consider the table legs carefully depending on the number of chairs wanted, pedestal tables often work. I would however take the sink off the island and maybe install a prep sink instead so the back run would be DW, sink, bin, induction hob (I'd integrate the oven personally). Is the shower room a must? It seems quite a trek to reach there with the number of doors unless there was a way to extend the 2nd front door forward and create access from the hall there. Also wondering if you'd considered removing the wall between snug and the old kitchen? It may make the area more useable rather than trying to fill the old kitchen

That looks a very well built kitchen so ripe for updating. The kitchen looks more like cream than magnolia, not that it matters! I think your new colour scheme looks great, modern but with classic styling. I think I can see a deep navy/grey in that beautiful worktop? I agree with Lacuna to get test pots, paint them on a piece of A4 card and try them next to the worktop. I would do that at various spots in the kitchen. As to the wooden worktop, you can sand it by hand and then apply several coats of Osmo Top Oil which is made specifically for worktops. I use it on my oak worktop.

Thanks sonia I'll try to watch it :) . I am having underfloor heating. I like the warmth of wood effect but also like the brightness of plain tiles. Definitely leaning towards dark units , island still undecided (all dark/ Dark with white worktop/all white) . Floor--- wood effect or plain , no idea. I am afraid wood with dark units will make to dark/ busy. Whilst plain light with dark units make look too clinical. what to do ? Is there an app where you can put all these and visualize? Generally flooring websites have that but it's for their own products , no mix and match.
