Tiling Design Idea for kitchen diner

Hi Everyone, I need some advice about putting down 80 sq.meters of porcelain floor tiles (60 x 60) through our hallway and large open-plan kitchen diner. The kitchen is grey and white with grey granite work tops. I have looked at white and off white tiles but worry about the grout getting dirty. Today, sourced a beautiful porcelain tile with black taco insert. Cannot decide if this will work in a modern interior and also need to decide wether to lay in a diamond pattern or not. Any help appreciated.

That's a pretty large space. Can you post a link to the tile, I just can't imagine it.
How about grey tiles? Did you like any? You can go either lighter or darker than the worktops, don't try and match it, it will never work. There are these metallic ones quite popular at the moment: http://www.porcelanosa.com/gb/floor-tiles/porcelain-tiles.php

It would depend on the layout of the space as to whether you'd want to lay a diamond. I often like the look of something that is off set or on an angle if the area is running between two different shaped areas. It sounds like it would be if it's a hallway into a kitchen. My only worry would be if the idea of a black taco piece against a light tile might be a bit strong across that sort of area if you're going for a contemporary look. I've attached a tile pattern which can be quite useful. We did it with a 60x60 tile and small 1x1 glass mosaic of a similar colour for a very subtle, yet contemporary pattern.

I absolutely know how you feel, I've been in the middle of doing up a dilapidated repossession house for the last year! In my previous flat I had a kitchen island. One of the things I loved about it was that someone could be peeling/chopping/preparing food on one side of the island whilst the other cooked - not get in the way of each other and still able to chat easily. You'll probably find exactly the same thing happens with a peninsula. Its also good for leaving out nibbles when you have guests round for dinner as I always find people loiter in the kitchen! I so wish I had a space for something like the bookshelves around a window. My bookcase is bursting at the seams but there's really nowhere for me to expand into until the rooms upstairs are finished. I'm glad you like the suggestions and I think it'll be an amazing space when it's done - please do post photos of the end results!

Beyond your desired look and feel, you need to have a list of appliances that need to be included in the layout. Most technical kitchen design is about how to fit all the appliances in. Cabinets tend to fit into place around them. I've noticed also that you want folding sliding doors (FSDs). They are very fashionable at the moment but come with certain issues you should be aware of. Firstly, they come with a lot of moving parts. Over time, new walls and door openings tend to settle and can cause issues with the ease of opening. When open, FSD panels take a up a surprising amount of space. You need to include that space in your plan. Of course, they can open to the outside but that could impede the flow of people outside. Consider large sliding doors or stacking sliding doors instead. If you're set of FSDs try to go with standard sizes as they tend to be less expensive than custom sizes. That applies to any doors/windows.

I agree with Jen P, if you need to leave that bit but the other nibs can go then I would try incorporating it into your design. it could hold a small breakfast bar style section on the kitchen side and art work on the dining side. Embrace it and use it to zone the areas. As Jonathan suggested, you need to start by working out what can happen with the walls and if permissions are needed, then when you start designing the kitchen itself I would look at how you can use it within the design. To answer your original question - Yes - If this were mine, or belonged to one of my clients I would make it into a gorgeous kitchen/diner that you can enjoy not only when entertaining but everyday!

I can depend on the aspect of the room. Also, the tiles will have their own 'colour' so depending on what that is, the paint needs to work with it. If you go to an art shop like Hobbycraft and buy several large sheets of stiff card then paint the samples on very carefully at least two coats, this will be better than splodges on the wall.
