Modernise kitchen/living area

We've just bought new family home and looking for ideas to modernise kitchen-living area.
Kitchen has oak units, checkered tiles and living area wooden floor with solid burning stove.
Plans so far are to re-tile kitchen and living area maybe a large cream tile to make it feel more like one large open plan space.
Any ideas for decor for living room? We plan to remove stonework at stove and replace with simplified surround ie use existing beam but just get it cut to a smaller beam embedded into wall to serve as a mantle. I also quite like the idea of grey sofa with brightly coloured accessories. What colour should we paint walls?
All thoughts and ideas gladly accepted....
