What decor for a craft room ?

I am decorating a work room that is North facing. It has two large windows and plenty of light but no sun. I also need window cover? But what type please ?

you don't want anything too heavy on your windows, so not to block the natural light coming in, maybe white linen curtains , blinds. If you are decorating a room, go for a spinning chair on the wheels, it is very practical in a work space. Loads of drawer cabinets to store your bits and pieces, high craft table (generally the ones advertised as breakfast bars have got perfect height) or a desk. Thank you everyone for your great ideas! Actually, the room is not as dark as you think - the window is east facing, and we do get a good deal of sunshine through it... I think the pictures don't do the room justice. I do agree, dark furniture does make it seem very dull though. OK, here is what I am thinking at the moment... Unfortunately, the sofa does not fit quite right againt the opposite wall, neither does the love seat by the window (I've measured everything up and the sofas are of the wrong sizes). I'd like to replace the love seat with a couple of chairs (as the love seat is quite chunky, and does dominate the room as you walk in), but I can't justify spending the money on that just yet :( I am planning to buy a bigger rug (thank you for the suggestion, ren2513), I do love the white/cream as we have now, but will go for something with a bit more colour through it, and definitely replace the coffee table with a bright ottoman (thinking something along these lines at the moment http://www.marksandspencer.com/oval-button-footstool/p/p22344378001 colour Measham,Ochre)... And I'd like to move the existing rug behind the love seat. I'd also like to either match the wall paper or a few pictures on the wall to the ottoman (colour-wise) for some continuation. The ceiling lamp shade will be replaced with something a bit more original (this was fitted in a rush when we moved in, with no thought behind it!) All the speakers will go, as I don't think they look right in the room, and will be replaced with more descrete ones :) We are keen to replace the TV stand with Skovby TV unit and a display cabinet (in white oak), so a similar idea to what was suggested by Sauve :) thank you! Haven't decided on the 'behind the love seat' arrangement just yet. Thanks again for the suggestions everyone :)

You have some really great stuff! and it shouts transitional, so I'd suggest you go with that. I think all you need to do is organising what you have in the first place and then see what else you need or is missing. You could do an art gallery type thing with your photos /canvases on the wall with the sideboard; a large painting/ print on the chimney breast behind the sofa. Consider having a shelf on top of the radiator, you could have a couple of accessories there or use it as a console table. And a large, luxurious plant where the dining chairs are now. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/a-gallery-wall-for-every-personality-stsetivw-vs~538039 The other thing I'd consider doing if it was my place would be to call a carpenter to arrange the TV/ fireplace side of the room. Some built-ins would be great there, especially if you could integrate the fireplace in it - it looks a bit stranded there at the moment. Something like below, but with the TV on the side. (last pic is from our former house; we had it built using the photo before it as inspiration).

I agree with the purple rug ideas, but maybe something with a pattern? I like the mirrors idea too, especially if you want to keep it modern. But if you go for art- I wouldn't bother trying to hard to match it to the room- go for something you love. If it has a bit of purple or green or grey in it fine, but don't pick something just because it matches- I think it screams inpersonal.

Hi Danielle. Are your parents literally looking to change everything then?? I can see your mum likes greys and inky blues, which way does the room face? Rather than use the darker paints on the half walls, which I think divides the room, consider using on the fireplace ŵall ( do you have a pic of this?) and under the stairs. I'd keep the other room light for reading.As they have a separate living room, I'd reduce seating, a small 2/3 sofa under the window but pulled away from the ŵall. Full length curtains could look good here but it depends if there's room when the sofa is pulled away, maybe check when you have measurements and go for a slimmer table. I'd keep the curtains light to tie in with ŵall colour. Where the other sofa is have an accent chair in the corner with a floor lamp behind. Where the mirror is I'd put a low wide bookcase with matching table lamps and a mirror over the top. I'd also go for a smaller patterned rug as its hiding the lovely floor. I agree re the porch door but it's letting a lot of light in, maybe they can cover with cardboard and assess the impact! Are there any pendant lights at all? I'd go for an extending dining table so they can accommodate more guests, it looks as if they could pop the extra (smaller) dining chairs in corners? It doesn't look as if full length curtains would hang properly unless the rad was moved? Perhaps a vase of faux flows on the dining table ( good quality!). The art looks good but I don't think the ones next to the window work so would look at some of the positions and maybe create gallery walls. design wise maybe modern English country?? Add the pattern and accent colour in their accessories, soft furnishings. It looks a lovely room though
