Porcelain Tiles for external application

We are a UK patio centre specialist in the supply of paving and other hard-landscaping materials. We are noticing a new trend in 'Porcelain Tiles' used for external patios and the like. I wondered if any body had experience of this material used as outside? My initial reaction states they could be very slippy when wet, especially used in the UK climate. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Oh, Rachelle, I'm so sorry, after all your research and planning and bravery!! Well, there's is nothing wrong with cream, but I completely understand how you wanted to climb out of that box of one colored crayons, lol. It is what it is, I do hope that you'll be able to build your pergola and I also hope you can introduce a bit of color with your door, this color is from sherwin Williams, it's SW 6480 lagoon, it would be beautiful with a cream house color and a terracotta roof. Good luck, and I'd love to see your final result, please post a picture at the end of project. And I'm glad you're upbeat and looking at the "sunny side" :)

I have had first hand experience of light coloured porcelain tiles . I have 2 patios. They were laid incorrectly - the fall was too shallow . This means water stands and won’t drain. You MUST make sure the fall is right both cross and longitudinal and that there is somewhere for the water to drain . Thankfully the designer and gardener have agreed to redesign and replace 25 sq metres at their cost but it’s all been very stressful. Aside from that the tiles are filthy as the dirty water just gets walked in. If we had to keep them we’d have to karcher every day just to keep them clean. If I were you I’d send them straight them back and get a porous stone . Suffice it to say we are having the whole lot replaced with porous stone /grout/gravel and planting to take up the water. There are lots of u tube videos about how to lay this stuff but in my experience you need someone who has laid a lot of it and I think they are few are far between My advice - don’t touch it Good luck

Inds, one thing that you need to think about is how you deal with the "external" corners. Forgetting this is a common mistake and means that the edge of the tile on one side or the other is exposed and this often leads to an ugly detail. With natural marble the option is often to mitre these edges and then lightly grind off the sharp edge to protect the stone. This is not n option with ceramic or porcelain tiles. I would try and find a tile that offers porcelain or ceramic trims which give a nice neat edge detail such as https://www.architecturalceramics.com/bianco-carrara-5225 If these trims are outside of your budget then there are a variety of stainless steel, aluminium or plastic options available, but ask the question of your tile supplier. My friend has the large white porcelain tiles throughout ground floor of her open plan home with underfloor heating. They look great in a contemporary home - cleaning is not a problem - white/light coloured tiles are easy to keep clean unlike black tiles, which are a nightmare (if they’re polished porcelain). She has 2 kids and 2 dogs and the floor never looks grubby so I would say go for it if you love them. As above posts, the starkness can be broken up with rugs, plants etc.
