Front porch flooring?

I cannot really tell by the pic. Is the flooring wood or a Trek decking like material? If it is wood, how do you keep it protected from the harsh outside elements?

The porch flooring is mahogany. Most of the porch is covered and pretty sheltered from the elements. The steps are exposed and do require some maintenance of a good penetrating oil finish.

Do you know what oil was used? I just built a sapele table top for an exterior use and wanted to know what would be best

The porch isn't attractive but a useful area for hanging coats, storing outdoor shoes etc. I would be reluctant to lose what is a useful extra space. Thinking: Around the door and porch finish the paving and step and if possible continue under front window Paint the porch and and lower panels (It will have to be primed first) with either a stand out colour or a softer option Use window film to give privacy and (in my world) hide the mess:)))

Hi Benjamin, Making the porch smaller, not bigger, would be a huge improvement. If the lounge is dark now, it will only get darker if you build a porch in front of it. I would cover the alleyway and use that for storage, leaving the front free of clutter. The only way to not to impact the light levels in the lounge would be to extend the lounge by removing the whole wall, but that needs planning and building regs as it would require a beam. Definitely not a budget project. To make the house more attractive I would keep the porch proportional to the house. As for the design, the house is pretty much a blank canvas and your window dimensions are great. It really depends on your tastes. You could go ultra modern by rendering or wood cladding the whole front and contrasting with the porch. Change to window frame colour to grey... or go really traditional with matching render, solid wood door and traditional glazing...

Thanks for the replies and good to know the porch is going down well. Good point about the extension window, such as brick above or a slight decorative effect in the way the roof sits above it perhaps? Maybe tie in with the oak porch a bit more but without going too much for the cottage look as I know it isn’t one. Will keep looking at Google images in the hope of spotting something helpful. Mrs Bossy, that website is fantastic and the project they did in Farnham has similarities to our house so thanks for that. I’ve long fancied painting/rendering as the brick is not the best but don’t have the guts or vision. I see that they changed the roof tiles too (probably necessary to get the full effect) so probably looking at mega bucks unfortunately…still, will see what can be gleaned from their pictures. Maybe I can persuade the OH to have a consultation lol!
