Would you get a home extension?
Comments (12)After living in my old Victorian for some 30 yrs, with 4, then 3, then 2, then just me, I decided I needed a bathroom on the main (getting older meant needing it more often and being slower at scaling the stairs). Don't even ask me how I managed with two teenage girls and one bathroom! The design of the house didn't accommodate an extra bathroom, so I decided on a main floor extension. Before I knew it, I was doubling the size of my main floor. I had 600 sq ft on each floor and was adding 600 sq ft - not all bathroom, of course! Several years - yes, years - later, I now have a beautiful addition: a bathroom with large shower, laundry room, mud room, office, and, best of all, what I call my indoor sunroom, which is quite large, has a bay window that matches two other bays on that side of the house, and has 4 south facing windows. The sunroom and office are designed to convert to a bedroom and walk-in closet should I ever need to stop climbing stairs completely. If necessary, I could live completely on the main and even have a care worker upstairs (3 bedrooms). It is my plan for aging in place - expensive in the short-run, but a saving in the long-run. I love my home and the location is near most amenities, walkable (mostly flat ground), sociable, and worth every penny (except that, here in Canada, pennies are obsolete)....See MoreWhere would you have your dream holiday home?
Comments (67)Kalami in North East Corfu. Beautiful clear blue sea, bleached pebble beach dotted with driftwood overlooked by hills lined with ancient olive and pine trees. A couple of fabulous tavernas on the beach and a water taxi every evening to take you to one of the superb tavernas on the beach (literally) on Agni bay or Agios Stefanos. Grilled calamari, octopus stifado or king crab linguini eaten on a jetty overlooking the bay and the fishing boats - accompanied by a glass of excellent Corfiot wine. No large hotels, nightclubs or English pubs. Unspoilt just like the Greek islands used to be!...See MorePOLL: Would you ever let your partner design your home?
Comments (39)My husband trusts me and prefers I make all those decisions. That said I always ask his opinion on large pieces. If I left it all to him he would lose interest before finishing! Design is so not his thing. But then I'm not interested in documentaries on outer space or Lego.... Best we stick to our own interests I think! ;)...See MoreHow old were you when you bought your first home?
Comments (119)I was 24 and my husband to be 32, back in 1978, we paid £19,500 for a 3 bed terrace in south London. Our eldest son bought in 2001 when he was 19 and on a small Royal Navy salary whist at university, sadly he sold it to pay for his wedding and hasn't got back on the ladder since. Our middle son bought aged 23 and our daughter with her then boyfriend bought their first flat at 21 and 22 straight from university in 2008 with one of the last 100% mortgages, they move next week into their third property aged 29 & 30. It's always difficult to get on the ladder but the sooner you start the better. We all live in Surrey by the way and nobody has been funded by the bank of mum and dad....See Moredebsdesign1996
