Hi Matthew, what a lovely open living room you have - love the fireplace! We’ve found that people are now turning their backs on the cool, sleek look of laminate flooring for the natural warmth of carpet as it can feel so uninviting and cold. Home owners are realising that in rooms such as the lounge, bedrooms and hallway, carpet really is the only option. Not only does it feel great underfoot, but it’s also a great insulator too, which will help on the heating bills over the winter. There’s also the fact that it’s quieter and helps to absorbs sounds, it’s easy to clean, with little maintenance compared to the upkeep of hard wood floors or laminates and it’s also good for reducing the number of allergens in the air. You could try a textured look pile carpet like Malabar or a textured twist like Natural Berber Twist (pictured here) if you’re hankering for a more rustic look. Art can really bring a room to life and a colourful canvas may be what you need. I‘ve bought prints from King & McGaw www.kingandMcGaw.co.uk and they have a huge selection of quality prints ranging from the classics through to pop art and contemporary. Prices start at around £140 but they are beautifully framed. They also sell canvases.

Oops! Sorry guys, I completely forgot to update this! Well, we did it. We went for the bonkers cat wallpaper and invested in some 'for life' sofas. We used Martin and Parker in Derby. They make bespoke sofas for not much more that you would pay at Next or M&S at significantly better quality too. We couldn't do the room until we had the windows replaced, so it did take a bit of time as our window guy (Stuart Harrison, who was fantastic and has done an amazing job) was not able to do them until mid summer 2021. Here are some pics of the work and the final result. It is really scary with a big ol' hole in your house! Lovely new sashes with architrave. Sacrilege I know but we did go for plastic, but they are really well made and look good. Windows in so starting to do the woodwork Making sure we cannot see pale lines if the wallpaper shrinks! How the heck do we do these corners? Carefully! Nearly there. Now we need to remember how to do school trigonometry to put the curtain poles up in the bay. :D All done :) Different angle from the sofa. We found some lovely art deco style lamps to go either side of the sideboard. The new radiators we chose. Moving the radiators into the bay from the wall opposite was not hugely fun as we had to run the pipework through the cellar. Pipes all very much lagged though! The sofa fabric was from a designer duo in Wirksworth called Blackpop. Lovely ladies and glorious designs https://www.blackpop.co.uk. I am somewhat pleased that the pic of this sofa on their instagram account has the most amount of likes of any of their stuff! :D The leather on the chesterfield is so soft, it is lovely. And here is an obligatory cat picture. :) It won't be to everyone's taste but we love it. The room is now cosy, warm and a genuine pleasure to be in. Hi. You have the makings of a lovely family living room. I would flip the sofa so that it runs up the wall opposite the French door, and have the tv on the even shorter wall. Don’t put the tv too high, and paint the wall behind it dark blue, then the tv disappears. I like the rug and don’t think it’s too big. You need to get rid of all the miscellaneous stuff,and invest in some flexible storage. Give your table some room to breathe, it’s very beautiful and useful.don’t have it shoved in the corner. I think most peoples artwork is generic and dull, think about the places and things you love, and colours that you like, and then find a way to reflect that. Try to avoid having stuff that’s currently popular, it will just be filling charity shops in 2 years. Take your kids to an art gallery and all choose one thing you love. They may sell prints, or it may just inform your choices. I’m always drawn to figures, my husband prefers architectural stuff. Don’t be scared, don’t be too matchy, and don’t buy one tiny thing and stick it up high. Art should be at eye level.but hang your choices with proper respect. Introduce some texture, with throws and cushions. Please put in some plants.And keep the panelling, honestly that room needs depth.
