Landscape Design Ideas for area above pool.

Hi, I am in the process of excavating the area behind my pool. It's a triangle shape that is about 60cm higher than the pool, separated by a small retaining wall. The excavated area will be supported by a 1.5m Gabion basket wall. (To try and blend the wall in to the landscape - while also using the rocks dug from the back yard.
My house was architect designed 20 years ago in a very modern style.
I only have limited space between the back of the house and the pool (about 3 meters) which is split with the pool fence. The pool is large about 4m x 11m - so it dominated the space.
Lastly, I want to ensure there is a screen between my property and the neighbours.

Hi, I have included a photo of a bank that we have planted for a customer. It's in it's development stage but it shows the type of plants that would work in yours. Plants that are slow growers and won't need too much attention are a good idea. We would add some screening to the side where the neighbours house overlooks, ideally bamboo or something evergreen, but bamboo does look nice in a pool area. You can add interest with the rocks you have salvaged. Good luck, I'm sure it will look amazing.

With pools and modern houses, I think bold simple schemes work well. Ornamental grasses planted en masse would look effective. We surrounded a pool with Miscanthus sinensis interplanted with Verbena bonariensis in thin beds for one job. However, given the size of your planting area, this might be too large an area for this treatment. My other suggestion would be to go for a sort of Mediterranean scheme using blocks of small shrubs such as Cistus, Lavender, Hebe, Rosemary and Euphorbia wulfenii. These could be planted in drifts to a selected colour palette and then infilled with grasses and drought loving herbaceous like sedums, salvias and agapanthus. The shrubs work well in that their evergreen foliage and twiggy nature trap the leaves and prevent too much debris blowing into the pool.

There are many different types of bamboo and most will grow in areas with partial shade. It is important to buy 'clump forming' bamboo. The other type is 'running' bamboo which is very invasive and takes over the garden. It can be expensive. The photo above appears to show a bamboo called Phyllostachys nigra. It is a lovely, clump forming bamboo, however, it can cost quite a bit (try googling it to come up with prices). Also, the bamboo stems only turn black after a year or two. this means you have a mix of yellow and black canes. I do think it is lovely. I've put some in planters to give some privacy from my neighbours These were planted at the end of last year and the bamboo cost £20 (but I split it in 2 to plant 2 containers).

Hello Charlotte, Having just had a look at the picture and layout of your backyard, I would have a couple of suggestions which may be useful to you; I am not a landscaper, but as I have just completely re-vamped my own garden, I have learned a few lessons along the line ;). First of all, think twice before you remove the raised beds/borders, as they are in the right position to provide screening for your yard and it's much better to have larger plants sitting in the actual ground, as they'll thrive and require much less watering than those in planters; also, the beds look nicely part of the existing structure, so I'd probably rather try to incorporate them into th scheme, or maybe remove just a part. You could try to incorporate some of your desired seating into, or rather onto, the beds, by building (or buying) some simple seats out of decking planks o.s., therefore saving space whilst still keeping the precious(!) soil. In terms of ground cover, I think the gravel is a great idea and it will look and feel soo much better than the existing concrete! Another thing that came to mind is that you could section the floor space a little by building some raised decking where you want the seating area to be (I imagined it on the left hand side of the picture along the raised beds, but in an irregular shape to make it interesting and more natural). This will create different "zones" and will, strangely enough, make the space feel larger. It's difficult to describe all this adequately, but if you are interested in the idea I could do you a quick drawing or mockup for further explanation :) Plant wise, I would recommend to go for those varieties that do not need full sun - I can very well imagine large ferns and wild flowers, maybe some bamboo, palm trees, or hedge plants for screening. I did quite a bit of research on the RHS website for my garden; it gives you the option to look for varieties suited to your soil type and climate, which I, as a novice gardener, found very useful! I did a search for garden pod buildings and amongst a lot of others, this one came up. I like the concept of simplicity around a pool with large sweeps of ornamental grasses and perennials. We planted a pool surround a couple of years ago with such a mix and I think that it would work well with large boulders and Gabions too. Take a look at our website for ideas www.designscapeuk.com
