Need advice on furniture arrangement for living room with corner firep

We love our light filled living room, but unfortunately the fireplace is tucked away in the corner which makes it difficult to find the focal point in here. Plus, I feel like something is "missing" in the furniture.....any design ideas would be greatly appreciated! I am open to paint colors, drapery, lighting, anything! The living room is sunken, with high ceilings.

Try angling a couple of chairs you already in front of the fireplace, either facing away from it (which people do all the time but makes no sense) or facing it. This will give you an idea about scale. You don't have room for two big over-stuffed armchairs, but smaller-scale wing chairs could work as an intimate conversation area, without blocking the fireplace from the sofa.

Hi There, Just a few quick things at first glace. I would definitely incorporate some decorative window treatments. I would go for a patterned curtain panel. One large curtain rod atop the windows, mount and extend them out past the trim on the right and left sides, so that the panels don't cover too much of your actual windows and block the great natural light you have coming through. Panels are a great way to layer and add depth to the space, This will also add warm, texture and help complete the look. Also, move your coffee table closer to your sofa. Right now, it is "floating" in the room and it should be in closer proximity to the sofa so that they can help "anchor" one another. Perhaps a small round end table next to the chair would help "anchor" that piece of furniture. Then, a large console table, and two flanking table lamps atop and lower the picture on your large wall. This will create a nice vignette. Right now, the artwork is too high above the trunk, and the trunk is too low/short for the space. Then, a fabulous mirror for above your fireplace. You can mount it, or just buy one and lean it. A start-burst shaped mirror would be a great addition to the space!

Hi Clair, It is indeed a very tricky room with all the doorways around and the need to keep flow. The best in these cases is usually to go for flexible pieces of furniture that can be moved around easily to adjust the room to your needs, so I'm afraid that an L shaped sofa might not be the best choice as you mention yourself no matter how you look at it you might be disrupting a flow somewhere. Poufs, Ottomans, Small vintage nursing chairs (these are on wheels so can be moved around), are all great options. For example this picture where the poufs are placed under the coffee table and can be taken out when additional seating or even side tables are required. I'm not sure of your dimensions but have you considered the largest sofa facing the wallpapered wall so it is the back of the sofa you see when entering the room? A slimline sofa table behind could provide a place for candles, books a place for keys etc (not sure how much of a hallway you have). See some pics below to show what i mean. The other sofa could either go under the window or the opposite wall. By placing the tv on a cabinet you wouldn't have to spoil your lovely paper and the damage to the white current tv wall could be covered by shelving/picture or other artwork. As I said it might be too tight for space but it could be a solution to what can sometimes feel like a waiting room space when only option is to place seating around the walls. Good luck!

Depending on how many people watch tv, I'd try the same As Carolina's 2nd suggestion but with one chair where the tv is angled towards the sofa (but not pushed right against the wall) with the tv in the other alcove. I do agree with Emily though! Seating arrangements are important for a cosy/homely feel but so are various other elements so why not post pictures so people can make suggestions? If you've got the space I'd also add a slim console behind the sofa as it will give the feeling of separation from the hall. You can pick up ones that are 25cm deep so could always move the sofa forward a fraction. If you don't want to add pics then think lighting, art, plants, colour, a range of different textures, books, diffuser or scented candle plus a rug to zone the seating area and perhaps some things that have meaning to you. Do you also have anything in the dining area other than a table? I have an obsession with cocktail trollies (and it's costing us a fortune with a g&t or 2 after work for my husband! ) but they're great for when socialising and needn't just contain alcoholic drinks if you don't drink!
