Sofa recover

I would love to recover my sofa and chairs but worried I'll make the wrong choices. I would love a modern, light and airy room but with a bit of bold contrasting colours. Sofa is currently red and chairs are striped. Now very dated. Thanks in advance.

Love the natural linen cushion on the striped chair. You can recover the sofa in the same for a light and airy feel, but choose bold coloured furnishings that are not so permanent-curtains, cushion, rug, throws, vases etc. Olive green borders on neutral yet is rich in colour

Hi, I've had leather sofas... wouldn't get them again. They look great and are easy to clean, but if you are someone who gets cold easily and don't like the feel of cold surfaces in the winter you will cringe every time you sit on them in the winter. (I'm guessing you have wood burner because your house gets cold) and if you are someone who is generally hot all the time then in the summer when your're wearing shorts and t-shirt you will stick to them and they will make you very sweaty leaving wet patches as you get up. The worst is when guests leave wet patches where their bums have been! Once the sofa has been worn in a bit and the seat area gets a tiny bit saggy as they all do, you will find yourself sliding into the sag. You will find yourself pulling yourself out each time you get up, especially in the bigger sofas. An occasional chair as in Sonia's picture I think is fine or if they are in a secondary room. Not to mention repair costs if you manage to damage the leather. Regarding cleaning sofas then we bought a upholstery and carpet cleaning machine. (The house had very light cream coloured carpet throughout when we moved in) It works great. We never had a problem with fading or any extra wear and tear.

She is saying that the UK is currently having a consultation on this topic and to write to your representatives. " Please consider writing to the UK officials and letting them know about your concerns regarding the use of FRs in the UK furniture in order to meet ineffective furniture flammability standards. The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards is holding a consultation on its proposed approach to the fire safety of domestic upholstered furniture and furnishings. The deadline is October 24. Matching fabrics is not always successful. How about getting a complementary colour and fabric on the seat covers and having a couple of cushions made to use on the other sofa? Alternatively get all the seat cushions on both sofas done to match in the new complementary fabric.

I think a soft sage green would take the room away from the brown look. The sofas would go well with it and you just need some green and maybe pink cushions to lift it. Re-upholstering sofas is as expensive as buying new so I wouldn’t do that unless the sofas are very good quality. Some lovely big artwork would help lift it too. Painting kitchen units is quite hard work unless you get a decorator to do it for you?

I had my sofa covered in a plain mocha chenille fabric by Plumbs a few years ago looks fantastic. Their ad's in the Daily Mail look really old fashioned for oap's but in reality the products/service is very very good. recommended to a friend & she had her large sofa & a chair covered last year in a dark grey - lots of colour choices. I think your colour choice depends on what you like & what goes with the rest of your furnishings/colour etc.

I had a red sofa that was damaged by my pets. I had a new loose cover made in a an off-white textured velvet. It gives the room a lovely fresh feel. The sofa is in a conservatory. I had a local person make it for me. Just be prepared for the expense - it is not a cheap option but it has breathed new life into a well-made sofa.
