Which varnish brand is best?

We have settled on a colour for our wood floors but the same colour is available in a number of brands. We are considering Dulux, Sandolin, and Rustins. Any experience or suggestions with which of these would work best for an entire house including bathroom floors?

From experience you can't go wrong with Osmo :) Also for all wood type tips you could ring Mark Finney 01246 261 664- He is an expert in this field, makes all his own products like varnishes and wood stains as well as selling the top brands also- could be wrong but think he also supplies Chatsworth House.

I'm having a nightmare, the perfect finish varnish I bought isn't performing miracles, ( unsurprising I guess ) I'm trying to do enough prep to create a good job, so I'm filling the gaps between the parquet blocks with wood filler, I thought it would help with insulation, and to make it look smarter / neater. Trouble is, am I blurring the herringbone design, and will I have to sand so much that the gaps will reappear anyway? Should I just leave the gaps and let the varnish fill it? I'm wishing I'd tried wax now, oh dear. Could you guys take a look at the photos, and tell me what you think? I've done one corner with medium oak Ronseal perfect finish. £50 a tin. eek.

If your contractor is preparing them - ie sanding back - then you could maybe use Neptune Isoguard treatment oil. I've used the seasoned oak finish ( on an oak floor admittedly - not Pine) and it gives a lovely whitened wood finish similar to their Henley kitchen colour - but you can put more on or less to alter the effect ?! It's in our lounge - so pretty high traffic - and stands up well ! It's a bit expensive ... But worth it in my experience!

Osmo oil is a beautiful finish but not waterproof and not permanent; it requires annual work to maintain. We have used Matt ronseal diamond hard varnish on floors, utility room worktops and waxed furniture tops that have suffered water ingress; all water issues were cured long term.

We stained our floor and then used Osmo. Great finish but you have to treat the floor with care (I scratched up the wax finish pushing a chair back and forth). Add soft sticky pads to the bottom of all your furniture and then isn't too much of a problem (you can buy them on eBay). You do need to reapply osmo once a year but I think all floor treatments need redoing periodically.

Dulux diamond glaze
Expensive at well over £110 for 5 litres but it really is the best.
