New home decor - patterned wallpaper and curtains

We have bought a new home which has been decorated to a very high standard, albeit to a slightly different style to what I would usually choose. Over time , we will make it our own. There is a large foyer and stairwell which is wallpapered and has patterned curtains. I find it too busy and wonder if I might change the curtains initially. This will be a substantial cost as there are 4 large windows and a patio door. Would a plain curtain fabric look better? If do, any ideas for colour? The furnishings and rugs are not mine as we have not yet moved in. I will be buying new items .

I actually find the wallpaper a little busy rather than the curtains although the dining area is lovely. Have you considered painting the dining area in a taupe or cream colour to match the curtains or is it really the fabric you don't like? If you're good at DIY it make be cheaper to fix the walls rather than curtains. What type of furniture will you be buying? In terms of colours to match you could try pinks, mauves, berry shades, teal, soft olive etc

Thank you for your comment and advice! Yes, I know what you mean about the wallpaper. I usually prefer plain walls and patterned fabrics. In this case, I dislike the fabric more than the walls hence my thoughts on changing the fabric only. Perhaps it's a false economy though and really I should just change everything! Just seemed a bit of a waste given it is all in great condition.

As you have so much dark going on, I would try a cream or white curtain... also I assume you put brick wallpaper as a feature, therefore let the curtains be discreet so no pattern.

I love Josette wallpaper. I used it on my chimney breast in my old bedroom. Loved it so much, another shade went up under the dado up the stairs and in the hall in my house too. We then moved and we have it now in our new bedroom in yet another shade! I put the paper up in my old bedroom. It’s tricky but not the worst paper I have ever hung.

I have a view on this having discussed it with my sister who is a home stager in the USA. Having painted my last 2 places "White Chocolate" by Craig and Rose (my OH called it posh Magnolia), following my sis's lead in using the equivalent "Inviting Ivory" (Sherwin-Williams US paint) - times have moved on. Before we moved from the "London-By-Sea" (Brighton) we were off-trend. The metropolitan-style savvy locals had bought white big-time. Nothing with any yellow undertone was permitted. Magnolia was viewed as the "Devil's Colour". Then came the grey and greige revolution. Everything neutral as long as it was grayscale. But as us folks up-north and less savvy caught on, the metro-elites moved on to new pastures. Recently I have started to spot a colour called "cashmere" - I am tempted to change my obsession - but first I need to make sure I am not committing some cardinal colour sin that I will be regretting and lusting after F&B "Clunch"!

Yes it does seem a waste although I admit I did the same thing! Maybe do just change the curtains and try living with the walls for a while, as it will be toned down once the curtains have gone, although given the pelmets that may be an issue depending on how it's been papered unless you go for the same style.

Yes it's easy to get carried away! With my sensible head on, I'll probably try living with it for a while and take my time making the right choice. Thanks again!

Use photoshop (or there are apps you can download) to superimpose your different selections. It doesn't have to be photoreal, but it will give you an idea :)

I think you'll have to change everything at the same time - can't think of any colour that will go with that wallpaper!

Such a shame. It looks like a lot of thought and expense has gone into this house, no it is not my taste, but I don't find the wallpaper offensive nor the curtains, just maybe not the two together. Stunning property though.

... you can paint over wallpaper as well using adequate primer/sealer for it, wallpaper it's self looks depressing for me...

I agree with minnie about the curtain fabric. Very elegant. Not so keen on the wallpaper.

Two points: I think the valance boxes for the curtains are too heavy and bring down the room. What is it like underneath? Could you remove them to lighten the look (or shorten the box)?

Second, have you considered having a different wallpaper? Certainly I don't recommend painting over wallpaper - so far, it never works and you see the seams if not immediately, over time.

This is solution for leaving firm and solid old paper... I will leave it to the owner anyway
