Natural ventilation in skillion roof!

Hey all, I need help deciding how to create a natural cross flow ventilation in a storage shed set in a coastal environment, I am planning on having the skillion sloping down towards the back of the shed, I need to keep a constant temperature within the shed, and was thinking a gap between my foundation walls made from concrete blocks and the zincalume roof at the top and bottom parts of the slope, the only problem is that I need it to be fairly weather proof seeing as it's right near a beach and that harsh coastal environment...any suggestions...il attach a rough drawing to clear some things up, hope it makes sense! Thanks!

The image attached is a very quick, rough drawing of the basic concept, I am wanting to capture the on shore coastal breeze through the structure naturally, is this possible with still keeping the building weather sealed ?

So the beach (and beach breezes) is to the right of the building is that correct? Maybe dont rule out ventilation that is lower down than ceiling height - like louver windows allow

The front of the roof, so the top part of the sloped roof is directly facing the beach, hence I thought it would be useful to catch it front on.

Luciana, I have looked at your photos carefully, and I don't feel you will get away with the Velux window. It will probably have to go. Looking at your build pictures, the entire room is in the roof slope so you don't have much chance of bringing light through the slope side.In your build pictures, I notice you divided the space into two rooms. What is on the other side? You have a tall wall on the shower. Perhaps you could install a tall window (transom) that allows light through from the other room. It won't be a view but it will afford some natural light. Question is, is it worth it?Another solution I have done for a client is to install a full window (we wanted to do it with a switch that turns it from transparent to opaque but it was so pricey). Our side return extension is similar. We went with a pitch roof and velux windows - this is partly because it was about 10 years ago and we didn’t think about these things, and partly because we’re in a conservation area and the planners wanted the roofline to look as traditional as possible. The positives about the velux windows is that they are relatively easy to clean (although we left a small path along the side - so that helps!). There’s no getting away from the fact that the room is quite dark - we always seem to have to have lights on, and now I wish we had much bigger windows. My brother has literally just finished his side return and gone for the flat roof and flat roof lights. It looks amazing - but like yours, he has no path and cleaning them is going to be a real pain. Regarding the neighbours - the velux windows nearest the main part of the house are overlooked - but really not very much - when sitting underneath you need to strain your neck to see the neighbours back bedroom. It really isn’t a problem, and unless your neighbours spend their time in their back bedroom spying down on you, I can’t see it being an issue at all!!

Hi Hamish, which section is N and which is S, if you are talking even temps, what you should be considering is venting on the N or in this case highest point, but drawing in form the S -coolest. How does this fit with your layout.

my understanding of how a skillion roof works is that it will actually move air the other way and vent on the high side. So you can build level walls and put a row of louvres above the wall on the high side for ventilation. You will need windows or vents on the low side too to bring the air in.

Hamish. Is your goal natural ventilation or a stable temperature? The solutions could be wildly different. Also, where are you; FNQ or southern NSW or somewhere in between?
