Wood would be lovely, but as Sarah says it is a more expensive choice. I have a cheaper option of laminate wrapped kitchen doors, and even after 13 years they look like new. It does all come down to budget.

We built fitted wardrobes across a whole wall including over two alcoves. The wardrobe was built standard depth at the chimney breast giving us extra deep storage each end. We put shelves in the alcoves for shoes etc and have clothes tail in front of it. No need to ignore the space - use it for less frequently used items like suitcases, seasonal clothes etc
