Plants in the bathroom - yes or no?
Comments (22)@catalanqueen it has struggled but it's still alive! It has been in a few rooms around the house, including the bathroom which it didn't seem to like - despite having a large window I think that the spot it was in in there was too dark for it. I've recently moved it out to our sunroom, where it seems to be thriving (contrary to all of the recommended growing conditions for calathea). The humidity is low but I've found that wetting the leaves at least once a week keeps it happy and it's throwing out lots of new leaves which is great....See MorePlanning new bathroom and ensuite Argh!
Comments (19)I'm not moving or building walls, or knocking through doorways until I'm sure what I want. Living in the house while remodeling it is quite a challenge. There are very differing opinions around what size the bathrooms should be here too. Having only one door in the bedroom has massive advantages where there is no door right next to his side of the bed being a superking, and also having no door there means that any other bed, even a king could be moved to back onto that wall, tv opposite wall etc. As a main bedroom with a double bed, there isn't room for a wardrobe due to the window size, those drawers are all we have, and the rest is in suitcases ...hence my insistence of taking a chunk out of the room next door to accommodate us.... more on shelving and shoes than hanging space though. There only really needs to be a decent shower for my husband in the en-suite and carry out the "three S's" on a morning. Plumbing worries me due to the structure of the house, so I'd like to try to make a common area eg back to back on the loos to help with what will already be a nightmare, however one on the external wall already may be a good thing. I want a good sized bath but not stand alone, I want surface area around it, none of this having to reach behind or to the end or to the floor for the shampoo and perching the soap dish on the side any more. At the moment, I take a little table and place it in the middle of the bathroom floor with candles and the tablet to catch up on shows, as this is really the only time and place I get to do that! The only time I see a shower cubicle is to wash dye out of my hair. Thanks for the sounding board and ideas, good to get opinions... I'll be back with something more refined taking all into account :)...See Moresizing for splitting a room into a bathroom & utility
Comments (21)Update:- I'm looking at whether we can move the wood burner so we could put the dining area where the lounge is, which would increase the bathroom/utility room inside the house by another 4'4 wide x 7'1 . Also means we don't have to build a side extension just for the extra porch etc thus saving us money! Fingers crossed it can work, but this is the space that we would have to play with to split the bathroom and utility now. I've allowed for more hallway space where it recesses to the right to accommodate coat/shoe storage How would you split this down now? The bathroom would have a nice outside window now so not as dark....See MoreWhy will my curtains not draw back fully?
Comments (8)There could be a few reasons this might happen. Perhaps a too stiff grade of buckram was used? Is there enough pole at the side of the window to pull the curtain back on to? You could try pulling the curtains back, carefully folding so that there aren’t oddly placed creases. Then restrain the curtains at 3 or so places along their length (height whilst hanging) using, for example, some stiff paper or clean bin bags taped around the fabric. Be careful not to crush the fabric. Leave them like this for 2 or 3 days. This might train the curtains to pull back a bit further when unrestrained. I had some double pleat curtains from Laura Ashley years ago and didn’t have this problem, so it might be worth popping into one of their stores to see if you can see whether the construction of their curtains is different to yours so you can follow up with your curtain maker if necessary....See MoreStaged for Perfection
