Curb appeal

We are renovating the farmhouse my husband's great-great-great grandfather built in 1819. What should we plant that won't detract from the house? (The White is the before!)

To avoid detracting from the front I would put low planters either side of the front door painted in the same colour as the house or white. Then plant them up with low growing plants some daffodils for the spring, lavender maybe for the rest of the year. Would be good to have a taller plant either side of the front door to stop the space looking flat however

What I would do however is to ignore the fact it might detract and put some wisteria on the front as a natural arbour and a few containers in he front with roses in!

I would put a wide pathway to the front door and border it with formal planting such a box hedging.

thank you tez, I like the porch idea, the entrance would be to the side of the house and if I could afford and permitable I would do a side extension but it's an overkill as the space is enough currently, maybe a small porch style roof over the entry way, I have saved examples of these. I've never thought of using a gate, wouldnt it be a hassle to open and close the gate when parking? but it's a good security feature specially around kids. we need to consider postman too. the side space is being considered for parking as the house entrance is there. and having hedging or planting at the front

Good morning, What a beautiful home you have A few ideas and suggestions to add some ‘curb appeal’ which are easily achievable and suit every budget: - Paint your front door: let it speak (pun intended : ) - Upgrade your door hardware - Upgrade your mailbox (if you prefer an outdoor mailbox option) - Change your house sign to reflect the overall look you are trying to create (modern, country) - Paint the wrought iron fencing to the right - Add an arbour, or trellis, or planters with a high back trellis (these can also be painted to align with your chosen colour scheme) to create a feature from the pathway to the front door - Create a cohesive colour scheme (see image with yellow door & plants reflective of overall colour scheme) - Illuminate the area: wall lighting, pathway lighting or inner garden lighting - Add an outdoor welcome mat or use decorative pathway tiles - Window boxes (as suggested) lower levels are easier to maintain – remove the need to keep repainting higher rendered areas - Create a feature within your garden area: water, decorative objects, bird-feeder - Shutters: these can add a streamlined look and pops of colour Wishing you a good day, warm and best wishes Team SPEAK

I would put your genius to bed for now.....especially if you have any thoughts of selling in the near future. I am looking at the colour of the car too.......if your red car is going to stay what about a pale grey. That is modern and clean looking and would go with the brickwork and the car. Pale grey would go with the windows too and give a very clean and pleasing result. Please.....not brick red. Ugh.

I am looking for advice on how to give my home a prettier front. I am considering adding a front veranda and maybe changing the windows. Also some sort of cladding to break up the brickwork. We have a lot going on at the back of the house with a large coveted deck and seating areas but the front is very flat. Any help would be appreciated. I have attached photos of front and back and proposed veranda.

Thick deep hedging either side of the porch with 3 topairys either side, planted in the hedging. One at the corners of the house, one in between the windows and one either side of the front porch

Are you going to create a verandah or anything around the edge of the house? If not, this circular terrace from gorgeous home decor may look nice with a bench or seats. Agree with wide path to the door and cloftys suggestion for planting unless you add a terrace. I also liked the original tree on the lawn as this typifies this style of house to me. Can I also say a white picket fence?! I'm not sure where your boundary lies but presumably you want ideas for the side too?

Lots of good feedback here. I had thought of wisteria but was afraid of the weight, so having this suggested is good confirmation! It is a hertiage-listed house and we are only allowed to take it back to how it was originally for any sides seen from the street, so sadly no verandah in the front but we can do a deck in the back. This is proving much more daunting than we thought it would be!
