Garden fences and hedges!

Hi, we are buying a new property that has hedging as garden boundaries on all 3 sides. However, we have a small border terrier who will love escaping through the gaps/ base etc. Any ideas for some kind of fencing to keep that dog in that wouldn't require ripping out the lovely hedges?! Thanks.

Chicken wire! Can be hidden in the hedges and will become effectively invisible (assuming hedges are evergreen and reasonable dense with foliage).

I think we will need something that she won't be able to dig under - my recollection of chicken wire is that it's quite flimsy and may curl at the edges - or have I got that wrong?

Yes anon2005 I’ve just painted my new under the stairs cupboard in Dix blue and everyone who comes in the house says how much they like it. I’m really pleased with it. I’m toying with painting the whole hallway with it. I find Farrow and Ball colours work well in our UK bluish light, whereas some brighter colours can look a bit garish sometimes. I’ve even cheated when I couldn’t wait for it to come into stock and got it colour mixed at Dulux.

Lap Fence Panels are the cheap ones , they look like this:- Close board or feather edged panel ( look the same ) and are a step up from the lap panels, they are generally better made and look like this:- Then you have the much more expensive Tongue and Groove Fences. They're a newer addition to fencing and not so widely available. I agree they are nice looking and you can justify the expense in a smaller expanse, but they're not cheap, about double , and maybe a bit more than that of a close board panel. In my opinion the strongest fencing is put up by hand using posts, rails and boards with no panels.

Hi Dom. Agree with Forza, gravel boards are the best option. You can also get concrete ones that usually slot into concrete fence posts but it may be possible to site them below the fence or just in front. Obviously a bit more work than a wooden one but would be much better if you’re building the soil level up. Legal height for hedging and shrubs? There is none unless it’s facing a public highway where I think it’s either 1.5m or 2m, can’t remember, but in a back garden there is no limit. Saying that I don’t think your neighbours will appreciate trees 20ft high:) don’t plant conifers, particularly Leylandii, you’ll regret it;). Other options are trellis panels on top of the fence and grow climbers....or pleached trees and shrubs which can be expensive to buy and are a little more maintenance as they would need regular pruning to keep them in shape. Since your border is fairly narrow I’d go for the climbers option. Climbing hydrangea would be good if it’s in partial shade, it grows fairly thick but has lovely white blooms. P.s. I think the compost you ordered is little pricey tbh although it looks very good quality. I usually get ordinary multi purpose compost, our local garden nursery sells it for £3.75 per 75litre then I mix it with anything really, top soil, bark chips, manure, then yep....let the worms do their stuff! Nice job on the house. Looks very smart:) Personally I prefer to see a hedge in a front garden but with a low wall in front to prevent soil/debris from spilling out on the pavement. Griselinia littoralis has beautiful evergreen apple green foliage that would look lovely against the house, fast growing and can kept trimmed to about eyelevel and 2ft thick. Plus there are many other plants that can be used as hedging depending on your requirements. Yew and privet are also good choices as these can be kept neat and tidy, although privet requires more regular trimming. Your cheapest option however is probably going to be fencing as this will require less ground work. A low wall approx 1ft high will not need much foundation work so also reducing cost. Hedges will need a certain amount of soil preparation but this is something that can easily be done by yourself. I’d ask a few local landscape gardeners to give you a few rough ideas on cost.

You can attach the chicken wire to short posts to make it more robust, or upgrade to chain link (bit stronger)... As for digging you could sink gravel boards in the soil...
