Let's talk dream features. Plenty of Houzzers lust after an Aga, we know that from our recent kitchen survey. But what about Smeg fridges?

Absolutely LOVE them but they are really retro and don't with our décor, I'd probably end up putting it in the utility and they're a bit expensive for that!

This is mine in the house I just sold. it was £5 off Ebay (and my friend delivered it for me from Wales, happy days) My partner knocked the alcove into the wall and a space for the wine fridge. All the glasses were from charity shops (and some really lovely ones from Sainsbury's) The donkeys head was in the sale at Abigail Ahernes Debenhams and I call it the Nags Head. In my new place it will be called Bottoms Rest after the Ass in Mid Summer Nights Dream :0)

There was a poll on here a while back about Smeg Fridges. A lot of us decided, that whilst lovely to look at, the quality was appauling and most would never buy again. If I were you i'd find a different brand or read the reviews first so that you are fully aware of good and bad points !

Thank you all for your comments and advice. Man about the House - you're correct, bigger freezer will mean I'll end up buying more food that I don't need and then freezing it and I'll never see it again! I've always had a very small fridge freezer and I think that is the reason why we hardly waste any food as we only buy what we can fit in the fridge. The final size of the room including 3m rear extension will be 7.5m long 5m wide but the kitchen part will only go up to 4m max in length ( if I go for L shape with island ) Emily - yes planning on having a modern kitchen Jonathon - my husband likes the look of them but not bothered about filtered water/ ice dispenser. I find them very narrow inside. I do like the french door style ones but again they are bulky too and very expensive!

Err - terible appliance. Completely unreliable and expensive. Much better off having built in refrigeration.

I 've one for ten years Don t reccomend them . Freezer door broke within a year, all the shelves in the door have broken. Most of the plastic bits have broken..I m sure there are better more solid and well made retro fridges out there ..I wish I had one

I originally wanted a smeg fridge but they were too expensive and too big for the space in my kitchen. So I settled for a gorenje instead, and I am so glad I did as I have read so many bad smeg reviews. A gorenje has the same retro vibe, but is not as uneccesarily bulky as a smeg and is almost a third of the price!

They look great but I've heard so many horror stories about them. I think I'd opt for integrated every time.

I considered it but then I looked inside one and was amazed how little actual space there was. It seemed to be all chunky casing at the expense of storage. Odd! Also the unreliability and price put me off, you're just paying for the 'name'.
In the end I bought a white Lec, much more retro in my opinion and still going strong after ten years.

I love my cream Smeg fridge freezer. I also have the Smeg retro dishwasher and washing machine. I bought them in 2011 and they are all FABulous and reliable. :-) My house is a Swedish kit house, built in 1946, in Hampshire, UK. I bought the house in 2011, virtually in it's original condition and have re-used the original kitchen units for a modern-retro look. I LOVE my kitchen, and my SMEG appliances suit it perfectly.

I have had a beautiful green Smeg fridge for 5 years which is now defunct and I will have to purchase some alternative appliance. I had hoped it would last at least 10 years and have been advised against buying another one. I was interested to see another commenter praising the Gorenje as this will probably be my next choice even if they don't have the fabulous colours.

I love the colours but don't like paying a lot to advertise their name which is always too pronounced. I had a lovely smeg oven once but it exploded one Christmas day...the only meal I ever cook, annually. Perhaps it was the shock....

Luuurrvv my "bleu francais" Smeg in our French holiday home kitchen. Yes, totally overpriced but pulls all the rest of my cheap second hand junk together and just says "luxe" to me every time I see it:)

Never had one. Look great, but judging by most comments are unreliable and heavily overpriced. And that the storage space is limited.

I have a black smeg fridge freezer which I bought in a sale about 9 years ago - whilst it looks good it's an overpriced piece of junk. The freezer doesn't self defrost and because the door seal isn't brilliant it has to be frequently defrosted. The fridge light doesn't always work even after changing the bulb and its noisy. Wouldn't buys meg again - it's now in the garage as an extra fridge!

I'm amazed at all the negative comments. All three of my Smeg appliances (dishwasher, fridge-freezer and washing machine) work fine and look great. The only downside on the fridge-freezer is that it is not a 'frost-free' freezer, so I have to defrost it once a year. The fridge is huge. The washing machine is fairly small capacity, but we are a family of three, so that's fine. The dishwasher is the best dishwasher I've ever had, with really good, metal racks. When I start my next house project (I want to self-build), I will probably buy the same again.

Perhaps many of these comments are suggesting a hole in the market? We all adore the smeg colours (my favourite is the pale blue) but perhaps not the quality/price. Why don't other manufactures widen their colour palette?

Had my heart set on a SMEG for a long time but couldn't afford it when we bought our first house. We bought a cream Belling fridge which has functioned perfectly for 6 years and looks great. Now moving to a bigger house and after doing my research, I am going for a red Gorenje fridge which looks as impressive as the Smeg but has far better reviews and at half the price. Interesting to see this thread as many of the comments reinforce what other online reviews are saying!

Have a red smeg fridge which my husband bought from Germany for about €1k less than any other retailer. It was still expensive! Looks great BUT it's not great functionally. The ice box handle broke and the cost of fixing it was stupid money. It also doesn't have great storage capacity. It still gets lots of comments when people see it though!

I got my smeg 8yrs ago new from Italy on EBay for 1/2 the price they are sold in Ireland. I love it, it updated my 20yr old kitchen.

We have red retro Smeg Fridge - great statement in the kitchen. Easy to clean inside & out, love it.

If the Fridges are as bad as the ovens then NO. Having bought an oven and had to repair the rubbers at least every 12 months, i'd never buy a Fridge or anything else from them! All name and nothing to back it up with. TERRIBLE!
