Windows treatment options for bay window + sofa in front of window.

We'd like to put up side panels on either side of this bay window. We'd like to keep everything open during the day to get lots of light. But we are stuck on how to have privacy at night. Roller shades won't work because the brackets will stick way outside of window area. We're wondering if we could just close the side panels at night, but we're not sure how to do that with the couch right there. We don't have room to move the couch way forward. And wouldn't it look weird to have the couch in front the closed curtains? And wouldn't it look weird to have closed curtains that will lay pretty much flat?

why can't you keep the blinds you have and put drapes on the sides of the window?

it would not look weird to have a drapery behind the sofa. have you considered a Roman shade with a black out lining.

We would say that your best bet is to go with wooden venetians, they come in a huge range of colours and give you that plantation shutter look, but without the bulk or price tag. They can be partly closed in the morning - giving you privacy but also giving you control over the light coming in. With larger slats you can angle the light towards the ceiling or towards the floor. I too thought shutters would block out too much light, but the look when fitted is so lovely, and with wider size slats, the more light they let in. The pics below have small slats but its the same style of bay with shutters. Also don't have the push rods on the front if you want a cleaner look. Having the slats split so top/bottom open separately like pic below is also good if you want privacy without shutting out light from the top. High gloss shutters also reflect light into the room and shutters seem to go with any look, period or contemporary.

Hello, I think the third one will offer better viewing of the TV but the communication between sofas and the use of the bay will be better in the second one. I like how the view looks as you enter. I would place a console in the bay behind the sofa. I hope it helps :) Gina

Hi Emily O, would you go for a built in window seat? The window seat could have storage underneath for shoes etc? It can also be another seat to sit and read or for when you have guests. To make it cosy you could choose a lovely fabric for the seat and add some cushions too. Thanks, guys. We aren't crazy about the current blinds. We hate the huge chunk at the top when the blinds are pulled up during the day, and the gold fabric holding them together doesn't go with our color scheme.

Hey There: How about you put pleated bottom up - top down shades for each window. Choose a translucent fabric for a lot of light and privacy...the blinds are only 7/8 inches in depth and barely cover your glass (unlike the chunk of wood blinds does). Just get a rod that longer than your window and make sure you have enough width in your panels to cover the windows and still have non-skimpy look. Usually 2 to 2.5 times the width of the windows. Since the face of the window isn't bayed this shouldn't be a difficult fix. No need for blinds and drapes.

Pull the sofa out from the wall just 6 or 8 inches so the curtains aren't crowded.

Bay windows can seem a bit tricky to cover, but you do have quite a few options. If you want to keep all that beautiful natural light, consider sheer shades. Open the fabric slats during the day for great light and close them at night for privacy, and you don't even have to raise and lower them. Hi there,

Looking at your window and space I think the best option for you in terms of blinds would be a Cellular shade. This will allow you the privacy and light filtering your looking for. This blinds will also fit inside your frame and not stick out as the headrails on these blinds are very small. As for the drapery I think a decorative rod and 24'' panels would look amazing just enough to frame your window and give you a pop of colour and texture.

1 ) You may have said you did not want to see the fabric bunched up top - but it would really look good as a combination of roman shades (to block light at night) and stationary panels (style can vary - on the sides for decoration only) - I would toss the blinds! These are my scanned sketches. One describes the romans with panels and the other is a whole different idea... Maybe you would't really want panels if another solution came along that you liked...

No - You need to use a little imagination for what I am describing. You are correct that image 1 is not a bay window, but a similar stationary treatment can be designed for a bay window with romans and stationary pulled back "panels" that wont get crushed by a sofa - as in image 1. See how the side "panels" do not reach the floor and there are romans behind? This image is simply a design I created in the past for a client but the concept is the same.

Side Panels will soften the window's over all appearance, but yes it will be problematic to draw the panels closed with the sofa there. Usually, the sofa is pulled out into the room enough to allow the panels to draw close. It's not breaking any rules that I know of to do so. Failing that option, you can still have decorative side panels and another privacy window covering mounted in the window recess. You say roller shades are not an option because the brackets stick too far into the room, but they should work in place of the horizontal blind brackets if you were to replace your current blinds. How deep is your window recess? There are still other options to consider.

@ Gallery Nelson, I was not referring to your pix with recommendations, but the OP. The photo he/she posted is not a bay window. Some respondents are giving suggestions for a bay window in particular.

Do not use any blinds/shades!! Use a decorative rod with grommet-top panels. Your window might require 3 on each side. You can get blackout panels if you need privacy. They open and close VERY easily. Just pull the sofa out a couple of inches. Your home/window is way too beautiful for shades.

I would recommend putting a honeycomb/cellular shade behind a blind, most are have narrow enough brackets to fit behind most anything, you can put the shade all the way during the day but pull it down at night and anytime you aren't wanting light, to give you insulation value.

One suggestion would be using Solar Shades, especially since the window is in the living room. Solar Shards will take away any distracting glare, provided your family with privacy at night, but still allow the natural UV rays to shine in.
