Can Faux exposed brick look good or not? Supplier Recommendations?

Hi All,

Currently mid build on our extension, we've exposed some brick (not as a permanent measure) but I like the look. The actual bricks are in too poor condition to expose, as render has pulled the surface off.

Anyway, my builder mentioned the tiles that are like bricks - but these sound a bit like cheating, and a risk to cheap looking finish?

I'm looking to cover a wall approx 4.5m Wide by 2.8M High. The exterior of my extension is london brick, and I'd like to match that if possible. would like to replicate below:

Can anyone confirm that these will look good / and not like tiles? If so recommend a supplier and have any approx costings (I'm thinking £60sqm)

Hi. Is your builder referring to brick slips? These can be used on walls as tiles, they do not look fake (they're essentially a very slim brick but I think some some them are real brick ie a sliver of brick whereas others are not). I think you can buy them as prefabricated walls/sheets or alternatively buy some kind of grid system to install (my builder told me but can't remember the name of the system but it wouldn't mean you don't necessarily need a pro to fit). Have a look at brick slips.co.uk but they're sold in a lot of places. This pic is from ebay. I think they're a fair bit cheaper than £60sqm but don't quote me as may be wrong! Do ask your builder as well

Hi I had the same dilemma with the dining part of my kitchen. I love the brick wall effect so decided to try a wallpaper as it's only a small wall. I'm really pleased with the results. It cost me just £9 for one roll from B & Q. You can only tell it's wallpaper by getting up close and touching it - before and after photos attached.

I would paint the ugly red wood an antique white and the bricks a lovely soft grey, then get some cheap small black tiles in a sale and tile over the red hearth tiles or maybe leave them, see how they look. Rustoleum chalk paint is just fantastic, just straight over the top, no priming, but to save paint I would seal the bricks with diluted PVA painted on and allow this to dryRustoleum chalk paint first so they don't suck the paint up.

Hi Zoe, What a beautiful house- such a striking and interesting shape! Have you just moved in? I agree with Jonathan and Daisy above about maybe painting the windows, I think it would really soften the dark colours and provide some nice contrast. We have been through a similar process in the last 6 months and I got myself quite 'tied up' in trying to make the right decision as I knew it would be a big investment and desperately didn't want to get it wrong. It's great news that your windows are timber and you can paint them- we had horrible white PVC so have to change them all to get the look we want outside, which is a lot more costly! I think plants would add a lovely bit of interest as a part of the 'finishing touches' but do agree that window colours and perhaps some part render would have a much bigger impact on the overall look. I have to say that we 'cheated' as I am terrible at visualising things and just couldn't work out how it would look in my head and went with the renders option suggested above. We got a RAL colour chart (the one with only one colour per sheet- about £40 from Amazon) and for two weeks sent any of our friends or family who arrived at the house outside with it and without pointing them in one direction or another, asked them to pick their favourite colour against the brick work. We then took the 3 shortlisted colours and found a fab Interior designer to do high quality 3D renders. Once we had the 3D renders it was really easy to decide and we didn't feel there was any risk of making an expensive mistake as we already knew how it would look. We also used the 3D images to decide what to change a very small and ugly window that dominated the front of our house to- thanks to the images and the advice of the designer we ended up with a vast improvement and a pretty faux Juliet balcony to rebalance the proportions on the front of the house. You could try something similar looking at which bits (if any) you'd like to render. It's also worth mentioning that this service from a good designer will only be a few hundred pounds (nowhere near as much as I thought it would be when someone kindly suggested it to me) so for me, was well worth it considering the cost of what we were going to be spending on the materials and labour for getting things changed. Thanks Kat D 🙂. Mine are called Vintage Yellow and I asked the company to order them for me without the red bricks as I wanted to keep the colours more neutral. It’s a good idea to order lots of samples from different companies as the texture as well as colour of brick slips varies greatly. Also a good idea is to do a mock up by tiling some of the brick slips onto a board with cement and propping it up against your wall to see if it suits, since it will probably be main focal point so it’s important to get it right! Faux brick panels have come a long way! This range is lightweight and the surface is a resin with a ground stone finish - very realistic looking. Here's a link to the brick range.

You can get some original old bricks and get your tiler to cut them down so they are about 1/2'' thick. He will need a water cooled stone saw for this (can be hired). One advantage is you get 2 tiles per brick. Christopher
