Brick slip chimney breast/wall. Dated?

Hi,

We were thinking of adding brick slip around our chimney breast, perhaps the whole wall where our woodburner is, but I wonder if it's already a bit dated or will become dated quickly.

It seems like a bit of a trend over the past few years, I'm kind of not sure about it. I want to do something to make it stand out a little but not sure if this is the way to go.

The trick is doing it so it doesn’t look like a theme pub.
I think you need to think about what furniture you have already to work with and what style you want to end up with. Try image searches for inspirations- there are thousands on Houzz

thanks Jonathan, the walls are white so I was thinking of white brick slip, so it doesn't look like we are obviously trying to be different on that wall. I quite like the white.

Yep I think I have seen it too many times in pubs and also my nan had it over her fireplace in the 1980s.

Hi Kirsty, I think its a lovely idea to make a real feature out of a heater for your son. I assume you're not in a position to just upgrade the present radiator as this would probably be the simplest and most affordable option (in the long term anyway)? There's a number of ways to help the stove heater look more integrated. My personal preference I think would be to run a strip of brick slips/tiles up a section of wall behind the stove position with a hearthstone under. This should help it appear grounded and it will be less noticable that its not in the traditional chimney breast opening. My only worry with this is it makes it quite obvious that its fake but that might not bother you if you like the idea of him having a mantle top to put pictures on etc. I'm not keen on the example pic I found style wise but it shows what I mean. For real authenticity you could buy a flu/black pipe to fix to the stove and ceiling but that might be overkill!

Hi Margaret, In my experience you wont be able to mix gas with solid fuel fire places. So you will need to make a choice between the two, especially if they are sharing the same chimney breast. Every chimney and condition are different, so even on my own projects, I would speak to a few manufacturers and ask for their advice and have a specialist chimney engineer / consultant come to look at it and not just my builder. All good plumbers are up to date with gas regulations and should know what is required for a gas installation so having a talk to your regular plumber might also be a good start. Turner Baker do a wide range of surveys for chimneys, Chesneys have an excellent range and Scandinavian brands have gorgeous designs too. Personally I would chose a brand and style (or a few) and ask the companies to come and survey the property and provide quotes. Good luck and have fun choosing your gorgeous new fireplace!

Thank you all. Apologies I'm not sure how to answer individually. I agree that the skirting board jutting out looks very strange, most rooms in the house have some 'interesting' design choices. Would you believe that the man who made these changes has now set up his own building company! The lamp on the left is from IKEA, I only bought it a few months ago so it should still be available. Unfortunately the lamp on the right is a flea market find so no idea where it came from. The second alcove is substantially smaller than the one with the bookcase currently in it. I'm just concerned that it may look 'unbalanced' with the built in shelves. I haven't managed to find pictures of rooms with alcoves differing in width. I do love the idea of built in shelves, it seems safer than our current bookcase and adding the storage underneath the last shelf would be helpful. I have found an original black cast iron Victorian fireplace with a width of 125cm versus the 140cm of the chimney. Would this work with the green wall? The room is painted in Breakfast Room Green and I've attached a photograph of the fireplace. Thank you for the suggestion about the mirror. This is the first time that the living room has been tidy enough to have the mirror against the chimney breast so it's helpful to have opinions on it's size. Thank you all again!

Thanks all! I really like the Serif, but I'm just not sure our living room allows for it. In addition, kids may be on the horizon so I think fear also plays a part! @Sarah U-S, thanks for the comment regarding the cable. I just see a video actually where the installer ran it behind a stud wall - however recommended not doing so for brick (our fireplace is plastered brick). That being said, we were thinking of doing something like the photo below, with cabinets built into the alcoves and perhaps even across the front of the chimney breast. Our thinking is that if the cupboards in front are kept very narrow it will not take too much space and we might be able to use the chimney opening to increase the depth a little. In this 'solution', we;d put The Frame sitting just above the cabinet at a sensible height, then pictures above say (as per @minnie101 's comment). The cable would presumably be able to run just a very short distance down into the cabinet, which wouldn't be so bad? Might even be able to hide it with a tiny ornament/plant in front...?

Trends come and go, so I think that you should do what you love, not because it is trendy. Of course we all get our ideas through what we see around us, so if you love the look of a brick wall, go for it. If you love it, it doesn't matter if it's cool to have one or not.

If you don't really love it, but you don't know what else to do with that wall, it might be worth posting your dilemma on Houzz, with photos of your room, and ask for ideas.

I don’t think it’s dated at all, especially if you use antique style brick slips. I like the mixed coloured ones as they look old, white will give a nice texture without the colour so a more modern look. Now don’t shoot me, but how about a white brick wallpaper? Then if you tire of it, it is easily removed. My brother, who is a builder (!), has done that in his kitchen and it looks very fresh. Wallpaper may be your idea of hell, but just a suggestion!

Do you have a picture of the bricks? Just personal opinion but white brick sounds quite cold alongside a presumably black log burner but a picture would be good

Hi Christina, we’ve just replaced a dated stone fireplace with brick slips which are real bricks just slimmer than typical bricks. We added an oak beam and slate hearth and kept the original wood burning stove. If you do decide to go with brick slips there are numerous colours so I would recommend getting samples. I wouldn’t want to put them all over the chimney breast wall as I think that is a bit dated but I like them in the chamber of the fireplace.

Hi Macbroom, your fireplace looks wonderful. I'm on the look out for brick slips. Where did you buy yours from? I'm struggling to find samples that I can get a good sense of the look of the wall from. Any suggested suppliers would be hugely appreciated! Good luck with finding yours Christina, I think a good brick wall is beautiful!

Thanks Kat D 🙂. Mine are called Vintage Yellow and I asked the company to order them for me without the red bricks as I wanted to keep the colours more neutral. It’s a good idea to order lots of samples from different companies as the texture as well as colour of brick slips varies greatly. Also a good idea is to do a mock up by tiling some of the brick slips onto a board with cement and propping it up against your wall to see if it suits, since it will probably be main focal point so it’s important to get it right!
