Comments (62)it says J J 1909, my house was built in 1984 so it must have come from the old man's parents' house? His surname was Jacquier. i have been trying to brush the cast iron plate with a toothbrush, a lot of soot has come off but there's a lot of creosote on there. i'm going to see if there's something a bit more efficient than my son's old toothbrush!! also, because of the bicarbonate i can't get in there without getting my jeans dirty! really pleased with it though! might do another wash and see if i can get any more off!...See MoreVictorian Renovation in London - Part 2
Comments (201)Thanks guys - we did a lot of experimenting and testing on some old floorboards before deciding on this stuff. The Osmo oil gives a deep and rich finish on old pitch pine that looks very different to varnish - deeper and with more of the grain being brought out. It's more like a beeswax finish from olden times, without the backbreaking labour and maintenance. Interestingly on the new boards (in the top bedroom), it makes far less difference: the new pine just looks yellow and shiny, much as it would if varnished. But the oil should be tougher and lower maintenance. We decided to restore these floors rather than replace as they were actually in remarkably good condition: this house has never had fitted carpets fitted, nor central heating fitted until 2014, and when it was installed it was installed with regard to keeping the floors intact (many systems installed in past decades saw the boards sawn up and hacked about). I wanted look that is obviously original, and can't be mistaken for engineered wood. I did think about a limewashed finish, but bottled it at the last minute and went totally traditional, as I thought less risk of a finish done to a trend that would be hard to reverse....See Moresummerhouse research
Comments (32)We bought our garden office from Warwick Buildings (it's the curved roof office, but they do summerhouses too in a more traditional style). We had a slab built and they installed on top of it. It's a really good quality Cedar building, which is aging nicely (with no need to paint). The walls, floor and ceiling all had 100mm rigid insulation boards and the windows were double glazed with trickle vents. It's used year round and just needs a small electric radiator in winter as we get solar gain from south facing windows. I'd definitely recommend checking on the quality of insulation and windows, and considering the direction it will face. http://www.warwickbuildings.co.uk/?&mkwid=s_dm|pcrid|247085519913|pkw|warwick buildings|pmt|e&mh_keyword=warwick buildings&bnine=true&gclid=CjwKCAiA78XTBRBiEiwAGv7EKhOZUioUX6YZqgDc4ZdG_WqabOtWHtFTgSCa7E7lAqDi7CpQYIaMdRoCZTkQAvD_BwE...See MoreHelp with ground floor layout please...... playroom, snug or study?
Comments (19)We did love some of the suggestions above… but stuck with our original plan! Although we did change the kitchen layout from U-shaped to ”farmhouse” style, with the table in the middle and sink under the window overlooking the garden. The old dining room has become an office with two desks - partly due to COVID and the need to work from home and homeschool etc! We have also moved a lot of the children’s toy storage in here although they still bring things into the main lounge to play where there’s more room. At 8 and 5, they also actually now keep and play with a lot of toys in their rooms, so I think the old dining room will remain as more of a computer and homework room - it’s nice being able to shut the door! The ”study” on the plan is very much a workshop/gym/play room for my husband! We didnt want to sacrifice that space. It might turn into a teenage den later on perhaps, or even a downstairs bedroom for my Nan. The small upstairs bedroom has become a second office as I’m also still working from home (and my husband has too many meetings downstairs!). It houses our sofa bed too so acts as a spare room and my space to do yoga and sewing. Overall, we are pleased with how everything turned out. We quite like the option to have space away from each other and the flexibility to change the use of the different rooms. We do all spend a lot time together in either the kitchen or main lounge as plenty of space in both....See MoreUser
