What should I do with the alcoves ?

I just moved into a Victorian property and have always liked the look of traditional alcoves. I require shelving for my books and enough space to accommodate a 48 inch TV. I don't have a massive budget

Build shelves into the alcoves, wallpaper them, hang pictures/canvasses etc

Hi. I would go for a combination of these 2 units so, you have a mix of traditonal and something modern to fit the tv and skybox. Modern is from storage--shelving and the other from builtinsolutions. The alcoves aren't particularly deep so check books will fit on the shelves when flush with the wall. The actual cabinets can project from the wall. It may be worth having it built in mdf to save on costs (not ideal but would help with the budget) and when painted doesn't look so different. Love the light btw!

wow stellahome, what a grand house and entrance! I'm intrigued! Do you have many original features left in the house? servant bells maybe? :) Post some pictures for us! I am very familiar with lassco, in fact I currently live 5 mins away from there, and pop in often, they have many wonderful items which really enhance an old house. Took a couple of more pictures today of the dresser, as even though it looks very worn, look at the dovetail joint details! They certainly don't make them like this anymore (unless you pay a hefty price for it!)

Hi Louise the layout of your space looks great. Time to entertain!! regarding the lighting layout, I would consider -pendants above the island -downlights to the main areas of the kitchen -under unit lights to the high level cupboards (linear led works well) -pin spot downlights (such as Eiger) above dining table and some twinspot (such as Eiger 2) to the lounge area and possibly some picking out art on the main walls -add some 5 amp sockets to the dining and lounge areas for table and floor lamps If you can, have 2 circuits per area so that you can really set the mood. Below is project with similar aspects so that you can see how we have zoned the lighting to suit each area. Hope this helps and good luck with the project.

Hi HU-416843511, if you are looking to completely take the fireplace out as mentioned you would need to get this wall plastered. We would still recommend having a focal point so an updated style fireplace would still work in the room to help create a focal point within the room. My first though was to fit a door to the smaller alcove on the right with shelves if needed, for example for the printer, and the other side on the left could take shelving but fit a door at the bottom for hidden storage. It’s something a carpenter could do as I doubt you would get the right sizing off the shelf.
