Hi Houzzers

Does anyone have any clever ideas on how I could recreate the look in the photo below, but on a budget? I love the sheen and warmth of the fitting and then the drama of the cluster...

Hi Alecia. You could buy the latest in string lighting - White Lightbulbs! They're for in and outdoors and in multicoloured bulbs too. If you bought 3 or 4 you'd have a similar look for a fraction of the price. 'MY-NEWLIFE' on ebay UK has some, and for about £100 you can get 100 on a string from the US. Good Luck.

Ps - B&Q sell 50 string bulb lights for £30 - my-newlife much cheaper, double the bulbs for half the price and show ideas for hanging them, including in a circle which looks lovely. Plus a 5% discount if you buy 3 or more.

A microwave oven is the device I'd find difficult to live without. Rechargeable batteries are so useful. LED lightbulbs. I can remember the days when the choice was between a 40W, 60W or 100W filament light bulb. Now there is so much choice and variety including ultra low energy bulbs like the G9 LED lightbulb of 1.5W I use in a table lamp (gives out the equivalent of 10W). @whirligig - I'm another fan of using a squeege in the shower. It's so quick and easy to keep the shower clean.

Furniture ideas? About to move to an empty flat soon. Bedroom 2 for my 13 year old very tech conscious boy. Want a wood table to work on his numerous gadgets and reading as well as a double bed and wardrobe. Is there just Ikea or another good budget choice? Also any good way to leave some empty space for lying on the floor? He likes it to be light and not clustered. Is it better to hire a designer to arrange a better layout? Very limited budget, though. Any feedback much appreciated.

Hi Yolanda - I'd change the stools, table and chairs, and swap the pendants for something in coloured glass or (personally) metallic, and change the cabinet handles from steel to brass/gold. Instant lift. Splashback-wise, try distressed mirror (suitably tempered and toughened) as it has loads of personality, bounces light around and is easy to clean. Then play with wall colour. Warm accents will stop the wood door from jarring so much (or paint it, if you can convince your husband). You have a lovely kitchen - will take very little to get it where you want!

We are having a mixture. Brushed steel in the kitchen to go with the appliances, as they are quite visible at worktop height or in the sides of the island. White flat plate in the hall and drawing room. White plastic upstairs. I agree that it’s better to get white plastic from a reputable supplier which won’t go wrong, than a cheap metal socket or switch which looks the part but will give up within a year, or be a nightmare to fit. Also bear in mind the flat plate ones require a deeper back box (35mm) so if you already have standard 25mm ones you won’t have the flat plate option.

Alecia, right NOW 'ACHICA' have started a mega reduction of their OUTLET stock. Some stunning lighting on there if you're quick!!!
