Window sills for new house

We have chosen timber window frames for our contemporary new build, and they will be painted mid grey, internally as well as externally. I'm deliberating over the internal window sills.... What material and colour?

Hi - thanks for your question. As a contemporary architectural glass company we don't often get involved with timber frames, we work with aluminium framed or frameless windows as the image above.

I would suggest you speak to the chosen supplier of your timber windows as every manufacturer will have a different set of 'standard' colours and finishes.

If your ceilings are white I would go for white. I always gloss windowsills to bounce light in to the room. More practical for cleaning too.

Ideas needed to cover tile window sills

My house is 1950s and has ugly, faded, water stained tile window sills on all the internal windows. We can't face removing them because everything in this house is cemented till the end of time, so it would make a mess and require a huge plastering job. Because of the size and number of windows, tiling over seems expensive. I'm not confident about tackling epoxy tile paint, and conventional tile paint will just look institutional. I'm thinking of Stikwood, or one of the new stone veneers. Any advice, experience of any of these solutions or other ideas would be gratefully received!

Need help choosing finish for external aluminium window sill

I'm choosing what the aluminium window sill should look like on our new windows but I'm not sure how much it should protrude from the house and whether the sill should be capped or not. At the moment our window sills are specced to be 75mm wide with 32mm protruding from the rendering of the house. I'm wondering if it would look better with a shorter sill and protruding less from the rendering, only by a 10-15mm or so. I'm also leaning towards being open and not capped. Our windows will be a dark grey contemporary wooden windows with aluminium cladding and the walls of our house are rendered and painted white. I'm look at these images for inspiration. Bearing in mind that our windows will be against white render and not brick or wood. I feel like the open ends better because they don't feel 'fake', and have more of a form follows function principle. What your thoughts are? Do you have a particular opinion about them?

You use silicone. It’s fine on wood. If you want to apply paint over it then you use calking.
