Need help choosing finish for external aluminium window sill

I'm choosing what the aluminium window sill should look like on our new windows but I'm not sure how much it should protrude from the house and whether the sill should be capped or not.

At the moment our window sills are specced to be 75mm wide with 32mm protruding from the rendering of the house. I'm wondering if it would look better with a shorter sill and protruding less from the rendering, only by a 10-15mm or so. I'm also leaning towards being open and not capped.

Our windows will be a dark grey contemporary wooden windows with aluminium cladding and the walls of our house are rendered and painted white.

I'm look at these images for inspiration.

Bearing in mind that our windows will be against white render and not brick or wood. I feel like the open ends better because they don't feel 'fake', and have more of a form follows function principle.

What your thoughts are? Do you have a particular opinion about them?

Oh, Rachelle, I'm so sorry, after all your research and planning and bravery!! Well, there's is nothing wrong with cream, but I completely understand how you wanted to climb out of that box of one colored crayons, lol. It is what it is, I do hope that you'll be able to build your pergola and I also hope you can introduce a bit of color with your door, this color is from sherwin Williams, it's SW 6480 lagoon, it would be beautiful with a cream house color and a terracotta roof. Good luck, and I'd love to see your final result, please post a picture at the end of project. And I'm glad you're upbeat and looking at the "sunny side" :)

It sounds like you need some fully coloured up / rendered drawings [elevations or 3D] of at least two options [maybe more], one with white frames and one with grey / anthracite frames so you can compare. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, just your personal preference. I usually specify an off white / ivory colour for window frames as this is more subtle and doesn't show the dirt as much. You could possibly look at a very light grey / silver as an alternative. Depending on the manufacturer and cost you could go for a coloured anodised finish which will give it a slight sparkly sheen. You can also get bi-coloured frames, different colours inside and out. I think anthracite coloured and bi-fold will look clunky and out dated in a few years, fashions come and go. If you don't want curtains overhanging the frames 750mm probably better than 600. However, speak to your curtain co. now before you get the work done as they should be able to tell you how much wall space you need. Thicker curtains with backing fabric take up more space. Have you considered timber blinds as an alternative, shouldn't take up as much space? Personally, I think a split of 3 panes is better. Always in odd nos, 3, 5, 7, etc. This means your eyes subconsciously centre on the middle pane. This is quite a classical, ordered approach [look at stately homes porticos] but it works. If worried about visible glazing frames go for ultra slim sliders such as ID Systems 'the edge' or Schueco, Raynaeurs are good but expensive.

So...Work is progressing irritatingly slowly but we are finally at the point where the wraparound lower floor extension roof is going to be built in the next few weeks so need to make decisions on these veluxes and I’m struggling with the sizes so would appreciate some more thoughts... The pent roof to the ground floor extension is around 1.4m in length internally - so is it feasible to have 98cm height windows with around 20cm of ceiling at the top and bottom? Or will this be a bit squished? I’m concerned the light is going to come through and just hit the external wall of the floor above (steel beam projects around 20cm below ceiling height which is 2.4m) Assuming 98cm height is ok...I was thinking the 78x98 sizes or a combination of 55x98 and 78x98 , and I think they will look better lined up with the windows on the 1st floor rather than lined up with the sliding doors?! I’ve indicated where the dining table will be on the plan (as you walk through sliding doors it’s dining table, island, then tall units against back wall) and we wanted to put a pendant light above this which is problematic if there is a velux in the middle of the dining table but this is my preferred layout so far:

The examples shown above don’t look anything like Crittal windows though. The whole essence of Crittal is their very fine mullions and transoms. If the metal isn’t thin but chunky the proportions are all out and then the effect is clunky - not like Crittal at all, they just look like any old windows coloured black. It’s all about proportion.
