I need Ideas and help with my kitchen dinner

OK, so it’s been a
long journey renovating a 1930's house and now it’s time to design the interior

I have created the
space for a kitchen dinner and would like some feedback and creative ideas
please.

I also have a
utility room with a large fridge freezer and a stacked washing machine and
boiler storage. I’m thinking of a shaker styled kitchen (Mereway Kitchens) and
I’ve included the design and space.

With regards to the
kitchen I have removed a door which let light in from the outside in the left
hand corner so I’m conscious of the natural light, having said that I have 16
spot lights and 2 rise and fall pendant lights in chrome which will fall over
the dinning table.

The kitchen can be
oak and I was thinking of having the base units in Light sage with a twin
double Belfast sink. I haven’t decided on the floor or the room colour. I
have a small but tall fireplace where I will put a wood burner. All your Ideas
will be welcome and appreciated.

It looks a lovely light room - the design is balanced and looks attractive ! Have you chosen your range cooker yet ? Some have specific guides to how close the chimney can or can't be and some have guides about items projecting over them too - Worth checking before you order anything !

English revival do a glass sided wall cabinet that might work well in the top right wall unit - might be worth upgrading to that range for your two glass cabinets, as its part of the same company so most dealers would be able to offer this I imagine. That way you will get a bit more light through .

Position your window blind /Romans etc higher than the window so most of the fabric sits against the wall not covering the window blocking the light !

When the kitchen is the heart of the home it can really get you down when it's in desperate need of updating. From your ideasbook it looks like you are leaning towards a fresh neutral shaker style kitchen, the same as you had before and if that's what you love why mess with it. I would say think a little about what works well with the style of house as well and try and get something that fits well with it. This means it not only sits well with the architecture of the building but when you came to sell doesn't jar with future purchasers. A kitchen is a big investment so it best it works hard for you both while you own it and when you came to sell. If you want it just for yourself and aren't worried about future buyers then maybe a color on your units would bring a fresh edge to something you already love. Best of luck!

A lot of people might consider what you're suggesting too dark but with some glossy surfaces, and well thought out lighting for nighttime this could look very smart and contemporary. Kitchens are very expensive, and this will be a very dramatic statement, so think about whether you'll still be happy with it in five years time and in ten years time. Take your time, look around and find the style of unit you like, then have plans drawn up, and whether you go for a specialist kitchen designer or one of the High St suppliers, the planner should be able to provide you with drawings that will help you visualise the space before you commit to buying, Don't fix an image in your head straight away, play around with combinations until you find what works....a dark floor could work well, but don't dismiss other shades until you've tried putting the component parts together....get samples and make sure you see them in situ...don't rely on what they look like in the shop. Hello! Painting your units is a good way to make the kitchen feel fresh and new without spending a bomb on it, and makes the kitchen feel a bit more 'you'. The colours you are suggesting sound great, the pitch blue is a really bold colour that I think could look quite quirky and a little quaint, the one down side is it you have don't have much light it will absorb a lot of it and make the kitchen seem darker but I suppose you are the best to gauge this since it depends on where your windows face and all sorts. If you want the colours to be forgiving on the bottom, use the more forgiving finish on the bottom too and the same on the top to match. Replace the handles without leaving a mark means using some all purpose filler (or wood filler if you have it/feeling fancy enough to buy some especially) to fill in the holes with an old butter knife and scraping off the excess, leaving this to dry then using sand paper to make it flat, don't be afraid to scratch into the wood a little since you will be painting over it before fixing on the new handles. P120 sandpaper will give a much better finish than P60 but will take longer, P values can range but the higher the number the better the finish (P60 would mean that there are 60 bits of grit on average occupying a quare inch so the grit particles are larger than P120 paper) for the work you are doing I'd recommend P120.

It's not clear to me if you have a chimney breast; there doesn't appear to be one on the drawing (or photo) but the computer generated image shows one. If there is a chimney breast have you considered inserting the range cooker into it or removing it altogether? This would give you more floor space in the kitchen and alleviate some of your concerns about light. We are about to extend and renovate our 1930s house and will also be going for a shaker design.
