Help with finishing new kitchen diner

Just bought the rug, not sure if it works - the chairs are red and the spots on the rug are orange. I can take the rug back. Not sure whether to keep rug and not have curtains. Or get rid of rug and have curtains in the material shown in patio doors/ window and blind in smaller window.
Thinking of wimborne white paint with clutch on back in wall, but that was before the rug.
Also we have 2 children 2 and 4yrs, so rug may not be practical??
Rug doesn't compliment kitchen units but you look one way or the other, so does that matter!

Comments (12)the problem I think is that there is too much space in the room which makes it look quite empty, you should get a longer dining table that could fit 3 chairs on as h side, I'd put a large wall art canvas on the rear wall behind the table or a large mirror is also put a plant where the Hoover is located, you should bring the tv closer towards the kitchen so it's central on the wall I'd put a thick hidden support mahogany shelf underneath the tv and put pictures of your family on there maybe even a faux fireplace under the shelf of you can stretch to that!!!...See MoreLayout help for kitchen/lounge/diner. Comments (4)I think shortening the lounge is a great idea. Could the new kitchen door go through the cupboard in the hall next to the shower room? This would make the new wall nicely balanced with the window in the new dining room. Comments (7)I’m confused about the layout. It looks like the entrance is directly into the kitchen area. Perhaps it would be useful to create a hall with storage. This then also means there is no access to the garden- would French doors from the lounge be useful? You say there are table in both rooms and the space is crowded. Presumably the plan is to reduce to one table- would you actually have to take down a wall to make that change? It seems like your parents are short of living space. Of course an extension would help but perhaps there are other possibilities such as converting the smaller bedroom into a full downstairs bathroom with laundry facilities. The cloakroom could be a new entrance in order to free up space in the kitchen area and create more space for dining. Since you are likely going to do some work to the house consider if there are things you could do now to future proof it. This means a walk in shower and a comfort height toilet, a raised washer and dryer, an eye level oven, door handles rather than knobs, innovative pull outs to make access to wardrobes and kitchen cabinets easier. If they don’t already use it consider smartening up the larger of the two downstairs bedrooms so it’s inviting rather than an inevitability. 8 years agoI would definitely keep the rug, it adds a little pop of colour and lifts the neutral colour scheme, but I wouldn't go too bold and I wouldn't conceal the windows because it makes the room so lovely and light
If it were me, I would add splashes of colour here and there accessorising with similar turquoise'y blue/orange'y red colours to pick out those in the rug and dot around some large glass containers with fruit in (edible art!!). A large mirror on the wall would look lovely with some sconces either side, on which you could sit some beautiful vibrantly coloured orchids/candles/vases etc. Then perhaps some shelves above the cupboard by the door with some brightly coloured glassware/jugs. You said you have some young children, what about framing some of their little pictures and putting them up under the shelves? I did something similar in my kitchen and it livens it up a bit (see below)
I would also think about perhaps replacing the shade on the standard lamp with something to pick up with the rug, or perhaps match it to the ceiling one

Just need to check if you think bone, mizzle or blue gray would work with the lamp too. Below is the curtain fabric that will be at the windows.
