Gap between garage and garden wall

Hi I need help and don't no what to do. There is about 15-20 cm gap between the back of my garage and my garden wall and it's very unsafe if we have young children and babies as they could fall down the gap. Any advice on what to do to block it up to make it safe and stop things falling down? We have a window at the back of our garage which does open so can put anything above the window. Any advice please I would be very grateful. Thanks

Hi there, It might be worth finding out why the gap is there first. Any ideas why they did not fill it in or build to the existing line?

Would it be possible to place a grate of some description over the gap. This would allow the window to open and the air to circulate in this area or even a channel gutter. They are normally used inroad, but it would stop excess water building up too. Quite easy to clean once it is in place. Here is a picture of one:

Not sure why they left a gap. Someone thought maybe so the garage doesn't get damp from the Earth but the bricks should stop this anyway way shouldn't they?
The thing we have is the gap isn't that big so it's hard to screw anything to the wall - do you no how these would fit? Do they need to be screwed?

Here's an update on the work. I've finished the pebbledash first coat, and the painter did the fascias, soffits, door and window. The green I chose came out a lot darker than I thought, but never mind. What do you think? What's left to do is add some nice pots in front, put up the guttering (I'm going to do that now), another coat of the white masonry paint, and of course the most important part, put a cat image in the window!

I need to resurrect this thread! So 2 years on we've completed all of the downstairs internal work, and knocked down the garage. We spread some grass seed, and there is now a garden space where once sat the garage. We did have a builder booked in for rebuilding the garage to the side of the house, and planned to add some decking where the patio doors are along the back of the house!/wall maybe, but now the builder has cancelled and is returning our cash, we're therefore reallocating funds to a much needed upstairs bathroom instead. I wonder if there are any budget friendly suggestions and ideas to make an area that will hold gardening tools/provide cover for my partner to do his hobbies by the side of the house? It's a wall then huge hedge beyond that which is directly parallel with a footpath and road on the other side. I thought about a shed but would the hedge not be impossible to cut and would it rot quicker, plus would the roots die off? We need to keep the hedge or have some privacy from the road, but equally need a place to store and use the space at the side. Thoughts?

I did eventually get it finished. We went all porcelain for patio. The ground was raised so easier to step out of patio doors. Still need to paint the decking or replace with composite. Now to put the green back in as we removed most of plants. I want to give some life to the gravel covered membraned soil beds. Suggestions welcome for the back fence which is north facing. Have bought some 50cm tall pots for it, maybe bamboo to contain roots. Back planter currently is full of tulips, doesn't get any sun. Going to put herbs in the middle planter. Would like a dwarf fruit tree, maybe evergreens too. Possibly alliums amongst some grasses. Thanks to those who made suggestions.

The fact you can see light below the fence line is nothing to worry about, it looks like all the surrounding gardens follow the same contours as yours, and there is no sudden drop between the gardens. You say the rear left gets the last of the sun? Do you mean the place you are stood where you took the last photo from? Not the steep part behind the garage. With a garden like this with so many varying contours it would be wise to get a professional designer involved to help you work with the levels. One thing to consider, if you build up for your terrace you may be overlooking your neighbours garden, not nice for you or your neighbours. I would work outwards from the base of the fence for the terrace an create multiple level surfaces with wide steps leading down and around your garden. This is not really a garden where you will get a large area of level lawn, but you can have a smaller level lawn, but surrounded with borders and paths to the different areas, lawn, seat or bench for just chilling, terrace for the last of the sun. You could create a beautiful little garden filled with texture and colour. Hope this gives you some inspiration, and don't worry about the slope as being a problem, more a feature to create something with a wow factor.

Personally I would probably run a batton down each side, so that they can sit in the space, but be removed quickly and easily, if you wished. Without actually seeing the space and measuring up it is a little tricky to confirm more. It would be a small job for a local builder. No harm in asking for a quick quote...

I would also consider the fact that older children may be tempted to climb onto the garage roof and that looks like quite a drop from there down to the ground. Would you consider putting up railings along where the bricks are, across the steps and a gate at the top of the steps? Then you would just need to block off the small gap on the left hand side as you go up the steps. Have any other neighbours had to deal with this issue?
