Conservatory blinds - Cost advice

Hi Houzzers,

My conservatory is a Lean-to type and its 5m * 5m - We have our conservatory roof with insulation and spot lights so no roof blinds needed.

We need conservatory blinds on the two sides including the door out to the garden

We called in Hillarys as they were doing 50% off blinds and the cost comes up for 2 sides including doors to about £960 for vertical blinds 89mm Acacia fitting inclusive.

As it was a lean-to we would have a sloppy fitting and hence wanted a made to measure one rather measuring myself and getting it fitted

Does this cost seem ok as we are new to this?

If you were our client, we would first assess which way the house faces in order to understand the direction of the sun and the likely impact on the space in terms of light and heat, plus we would ask what use you intend to place on the new space. It is also the case that with whatever heating - a fully glazed conservatory can seem an inhospitable space in the winter months. Even in the UK heat gain during our short summer is a major consideration and whilst roof blinds can be added - these can spoil the original design intent. We built a glass lean-to a year ago. It measures 4x3m and use it as year round dining room. We have no real temperature issues. We fitted thermal roof roller blinds which also help maintain year round temperature, particularly in the summer. If it's really cold in the winter we may switch on a small heater. Have a good look around and you will find that glass technology has evolved. We are really pleased with ours and highly recommend going for a glass conservatory. Do a good research and ask for glass efficiencies. Good luck

I have always put roman blinds above any window like this; they do not get as dirty as you imagine, they can be vacuumed regularly anyway for dust. Anything slatted always attracts dust and looks a bit over functional/starter home in my view. You can get them made or make them yourself if you have any simple sewing skills, the measuring is hardest part, all the seams are straight and easy to do. I have found I have saved myself a fortune this way and they always look classy too. I would recommend washing the fabric before making up and using a less textured, more shiny fabric if possible, as they can then even be taken down to wash occassionally in the bath and hung outside; less texture on fabric retains the dirt and grease less.
