Love the roof what material is it made from

How can I achieve the same style for my new extension. The builder has said it has to be flat, but I don't like the look of a flat felt roof.

Hi, the material used here is a EDPM type material which is a flat roofing material, you can also look at GRP fibreglass roofing which is very popular at the moment, it doesn't have as smooth a finish as EDPM but still looks good. We would never use felt these days its a very out of date material.

Might be worth contacting velux as there's something very wrong. The conservation velux windows they offer are either pivot or top hung, maybe they offered side hung in the past but the black inner doesn't look like their finish. http://www.velux.co.uk/products/roof-windows/conservation-roof-windows Are you sure it's velux, there are other companies such as Fakro that also offer them, I think they do side hung ones for habitable rooms too. Good luck, let me know how you get on as I'm about to spec 13 veluxes for our new house...

Hi Bry R! Choosing a kitchen worktop is a very personal choice where a couple of factors come into play. You will need to consider and prioritise: budget, look/feel, durability, usage/sensitivity. Leaving budget out for a second we reviewed your 3 materials Quartz, laminate and concrete for you: Quartz - Beautiful stone that can be used anywhere, even near the hob and sink. On the durability side, it is a very tough stone ( especially in composite form) that is more durable than many other natural stones. Also potential scratches can be sanded out if needed! Very easy to maintain. Concrete - It looks amazing. But in our opinion, a kitchen is more practical than just an aesthetic feature… but this is very personal! Concrete is more sensitive to staining of food and water. So either you need to use a food-grade sealer, get out the chopping board, or order takeaway! Concrete can also be sensitive to scratching. Last but not least given that it is heavy, you might need to rethink about your cabinetry for reinforcement. Laminate - Very flexible and can be used for all surfaces. Can also mimic any natural materials you like ( even concrete!). It is very sensitive to heat and you cannot test your vegetable cutting on it! But apart from that it is pretty resistant to stains and chemicals. Its cost even allows you to change the look of your kitchen with just changing the worktop in couple of years time, without breaking the bank. If your budget stretches it, we would advise the quartz unless you love the look of concrete and you don’t mind giving a bit more care and love to this stunning beauty in your home! I agree with all the advice above and would add, when you have the plans, consider going to see your neighbours in person, (especially the one which will be most affected). Do this before the plans are submitted, or if you have a diplomatic architect, ask them to speak to your neighbours to just talk them through what you plan to do. It usually goes down better than the planning consultation letter just landing on their laps. If they ask, don't feel you have to agree to any concessions there and then, tell them that you don't have any expertise but "of course you can discuss it with your architect". Leave the architect to handle anything contentious as you want to remain on good terms with your neighbour and the architect won't have anything to loose as they don't have to live next door to them. When it comes to the building work, ensure that there is excellent insulation in the roof. There are now super thin insulations that are effective (if you need it to be thin) but go for more than the regs require. Also ensure that the roofing is done superbly, good flashing details, adequate falls etc as this is what lets down roof terraces. Ensure that there is power, water (power safely near the water for irrigation if that is what you are going to have) and if you need it check your internet signal and provide a booster (perhaps in the hall) if it is not good enough. This summer has shown that outside workspace can be a real benefit. When it comes to the finish material, consider Millboard (https://millboard.co.uk/samples) I used the 'enhanced grain' finish. I have used it on three jobs and I am very happy with this relatively lightweight, low maintenance, good quality (not cheap) product. Ensure that there is access to inspect the roof should you need to and clear leaves (it is amazing how many will find their way in-between even tiny gaps) You will probably need less light than you might think (consider your contribution to light pollution). Consider if you can have solar powered lights and water capture for watering plants and avoid outdoor speakers as these really will annoy your neighbours. I love roof terraces as they are usable for so much of the year, often warmer than a lower garden in the winter. Good luck with it. Regina.

I would go with GRP. EDPM is quicker and cheaper to install but not necessarily the best thing. Sometimes you pay for the expertise and I think if your going for a flat roof, this is one of them! I know this is off topic but I had to change my coffee machine rubber seal after two years and that’s quite simple compared to my roof 😩. Sometimes in life you pay for what you get, I think this is one of those occasions
