Laminate over tiles

I am interested in buying a flat but the hall and lounge have been tiled, I don't mind tiles in the hall but not the lounge. I believe it will be very messy to take the tiles up, can I put laminate directly over the tiles?

Hello,

My parents decided to tile hallway, dining and kitchen area and few years on my mum got tired of it and they laminated the entire floor. The tiles weren't taken up and few years on it still looks amazing, of course my mum maintains it well. Shouldn't be a problem laminating directly on the tiles in your home.

Hi Tracey, We understand the importance of picking the right floor as it's a job you only really want to do once. We are the direct importers of solid and engineered wood flooring and have been trading since 2006. If there's one thing we guarantee on it that we know about wooden floors. We like to give as much free advice and help where and when we can, so here's a few for you. Firstly make sure if you do go with a wooden floor, that it is engineered, and suitable for underfloor heating. (some engineered floors actually aren't suitable as the adhesive used may not be compatible) Just to assure you, all our engineered wood floors are. The construction of engineered wood, as opposed to solid, restricts the movement of expansion and contraction due to the temperature change of UFH. Wood it'self is a great conductor of heat and more importantly retains the warmth a lot better than tiles. Also, an advantage of using wood flooring is if it's damaged, scratched/stained, it is easily repairable by simply sanding it down and reapplying oil/lacquer. If tiles were to get damaged/cracked, you would need to replace it. Why not take a look through at some of the projects we have done as we have several styles from standard planks, herringbone, chevron and Versailles panels. We have Karndean throughout the back of our house - Snug, kitchen, dining area, utility and downstairs shower room. Great............Warmer on the foot than tile, which we used to have in the kitchen and utility. We levelled the floor and went straight over the top everywhere. Porcelain tiles do look nice, but for us would be really impractical. The dogs come in and out as they choose, the back door is in constant use as we don't use the front much. We're not in to constant mopping, so with the dog, grand kids our boots etc Karndean won. The Karndean also survived two major leaks. One from an upstairs shower and the other when the muppets fitting our glass roof left the old one off, didn't cover the conservatory and a storm came over - thanks 'well known window company'!

Depends whether you want efficient or always warm underfoot? Efficiency of UFH affected by insulation. How airtight is the house? Do you have mechanical ventilation etc?

your floor choice will work great :) i have ufh in new build with air source heatpump and 21mm thick engineered wood floor (probably only carpet and solid wood would be considered less effective) and it is great, id make same choice again. i have ceramic tiles in 2 bathrooms and it definitely conducts heat better, lovely and warm underfoot when heating is running but as others have said its cooler the rest of the time. the remainder of the house just has a lovely even heat. its also very cost effective,i pay same in 4 bed, 2 bath house as i did in a previous 2 bed house (which was also new build but storage heaters). please forgive the lack of punctuation and poor sentences, this is my third attemp at posting a reply and ive lost patience writing the same thing!
