Have you seen this video which went viral a few weeks ago? If you have an upstairs neighbour, perhaps you will recognise some elements of this.

Hello Emmeline,

Have to say this video is brilliant... (i've been at Zoffany had 4 glasses of Champagne there and looked at lovely things... and feeling rather happy... So watching this video had me roaring and grinning inanely.. It's mostly quite and serene for me... but I do like tranquil and I do like a well spoken dulcet tone rather....

So in no particular order.. it's an array of...

Television that sounds like it's playing for the entire area.. Past Wandsworth Common and veering towards Chelsea..

It's the creaking boards that never ever seem to be fixed..

It's the occasional big foot.. and the Henderson's when they arrive!

It's the door or a cupboard slamming.. that's not once... but 5 or 6 times in a row.. or more... then silence for 5 minutes and then it starts again.. at least once a day.. (they have moved now so fingers crossed... )

It's the woman in the next roads building that sounds like a foghorn for the northern hemisphere...

I used to live in a downstairs flat. 90% of the sounds I heard are too vulgar for public broadcast, but I can confirm I heard EVERYTHING! And I mean the lot!!
Other noises were arguments and curtains. So pleased to no longer live in a flat :)

The shortest time we lived in a house was 18 months - the neighbour turned out to have serious psychological problems, he took against me within weeks, pushing notes through letterbox saying I was a female she devil and deserved to burn in hell etc, etc. and quoting bible stuff. I had not even seen or spoken to him at that point, just held perfectly normal conversations with his partner. Then it was pounding on our adjoining walls at night, digging up the plumbing pipes behind our houses (he didn't want polluted excrement through the pipes?!) going out to his work leaving the Magic flute playing at full blast (echoes an episode of Morse?) until we had to call the police. The culmination was a throwing bricks at our french windows standing in our garden, apparently attempting to stone me (something biblical again?). We couldn't sell the house to anyone but a landlord who "took it off our hands" at a price below what we paid for it. I felt guilty as he continued to harass various renters afterwards, but eventually they moved out, not before breaking the legs of the last occupant next door. The police were very politically correct throughout and of course I felt immensely sorry for his condition, but have to wonder about care in the community as opposed to the days when people with serious psychiatric problems were locked up for their own good and the good of others. What do people think on that score??

Hi Silvia, Thank you for your suggestion, it's much appreciated. Unfortunately the cupboards which are currently in bedroom one would be too small to convert and if we did convert them then we would need to find some other space for clothes. I think we will need to build an ensuite next to the current bathroom for soil pipe reasons too. It's a bit of an awkward space so we are thinking of knocking internal walls down upstairs and changing the layout completely. Please let me know if you can think of a better layout! Stephanie

Firstly, what did you sign and have you got a copy of it?? If the extension needed planning you would have had a Party Wall Agreement possibly. If it's not within regulations, then approach your local council planning department and complain about it. Even if they did not require permission from planning, they would have had to have building regs. Therefore, it would have required a sign off from that department, so, with reference to the height, you may be able to argue on that ground. As for light, they had an extension there anyway, they've just squared the roof off, so I think that may prove to be a mute point, unless you can prove the height issue. Then force them to go through planning as it's not within regulations and dispute it. If the extension is within 2 metres of the boundary it cannot be more than 3m in height. Legally I don't think you are supposed to do anything to a neighbour's fence/boundary wall etc except erect your own fence to hide it. There is already a shed attached to this wall so I assume there's either a good relationship with the neighbours or they don't know and weren't asked; as Daisy said they poss can't see it. It doesn't hurt to ask out of courtesy, I'd only think there would be a problem if any drilling affected their internal plaster but if it's a garage that might not be an issue. I wouldn't put up with that view from a lovely new window seat feature when it's a quick and potentially dramatic improvement (i say whilst lying in bed with no attempt to tackle my eyesore of a garden!!) I lived in a ground floor flat for 17 years. Had noisy neighbours upstairs twice and I could too could hear EVERYTHING. Not to mention the disgusting things, I could hear:
- On rainy days the ball being thrown for the dog to chase down the hall.
- Dog howling for 20 mins every time they left him.
- Petty arguments about who paid whichever utility bill last time.
- How much he spent down the pub.
- Argument going on for 2 hours because his friend said the girlfriend was fat.
- Argument going on for at least 15 minutes, over the sound of the baby crying, in relation to who's turn it was to see to the baby.
The thing that really sticks in my mind is how long unhappy couples argue over the most trivial things!
