How do you create a welcoming atmosphere in the home?

Creating an atmosphere is arguably one of the critical components of any good home, and having that je ne sais quoi can definitely add some finesse to what is undoubtedly an already wonderful home! Some of my friends might argue I veer on the obsessive when it comes to having music on in the house, but it's one way I go about making sure there's always a buzz and warmth to the home.

So, how do you create a welcoming atmosphere in the home? Whether it's soft lighting, baked goods, lots of plants or something else, comment below!

Hi Tom,

It is a great subject for a discussion. A welcoming atmosphere is usually created by an emotion. Objects such as art, photo frames, pieces with sentimental values, antiques can create an emotion. It is also important to pay attention to textures and colours that are at the first sight when entering a home. The most important aspect of a welcoming atmosphere in any home is attention to detail - how and where you place objects, whether there is a small accessory on a furniture unit, interesting objects on a shelf, a vase with flowers on a table etc. And last not least is smell - invest in a very nice room scent that would appeal to most people not just yourself.

Personally I think bad lighting can ruin the atmosphere. In my opinion people are too keen to make their homes light and want lots of white light and reflective finishes often resulting in a cold feel.
Lots of light sources, warmer light sources, warm tones and natural products all help.

We rent unfurnished, so always have our own furniture around us. I don't go in TOO much for the soft furnishings (rugs, cushions, curtains, throws), as they are cluttersome and really interefere with a low-maintenance life. Moreover, sadly, my posters, paintings and photographs have had to stay in storage for about five years, due to increasing fussiness by landlords/ -ladies about holes in the walls. HOWEVER, it is crucial to have ENOUGH of your own things around you, so that the web of YOUR things covers over a space which is, essentially, not yours. Minimalism has definite limits. Our last place had revolting dull mustard yellow walls, which definitely needed covering! Bookcases (with books!), a folding screen/ room divider, tension rods to create hanging rails, and one big rug (for the sitting room) come with us everywhere, like the interior of some sort of nomad's yurt! Seasonal and fresh decorations are another way to decorate a temporary home, and they leave only biodegradable waste, rather than broken MDF or shattered plastic! Leaf-skeletons on a string and rosehip-studded twigs (snap off the thorns!) for autumn (Fall). Holly, ivy and dried wildflowers for winter. Fresh wildflowers for spring and summer. Herbs in the kitchen.

At home, we have underfloor heating in the kitchen and bathrooms. The other rooms are still heated by electric storage heaters, which I hate as they are far too unresponsive. I'll replace them as the rooms get refurbished, one day. Nearly all of our customers now have underfloor heating, either electric or in-screed water pipes.

I install home automation equipment and lighting controls. I don't have a TV in the house : ) I do though, have a projector with a retractable screen. This has totally changed the way we watch TV. We only watch what we want to - which is mainly programs recorded via Youview or films. When the projector isn't on, the screen is out of sight in the ceiling and the room is setup for more social activities. Personally, I couldn't be without the radio. We have speakers in every room for this and music in general. Upstairs this is done with inceiling speakers so again, it is a discrete system.

A great and homely atmosphere starts by a welcoming outside... Outdoor lights on, you can glance by front window at a warm interior... Then, the host plays a role and welcomes you warmly with a smile. The smells and sounds, the lighting play a bigger roles in my view than the actual content of the house! I love the smell of coffee with a soft music on ( try the French band Air! Fabulous background music) I love hearing children play far away on the above floor... Basically, it is a house that feels Happy.

Your home is where you get to express you (and your family); who you are; where you have been and what interests you. Keeping your home full of things that you love and interest you makes it personal and will create an atmosphere that is warm and inviting. Make sure you edit though and don't overload it with too much personality. I too love music to be a part of my home environment.

Warm lighting, personal touches eg family pics etc, and wood...I find it really difficult to have a warm atmosphere without wood somewhere along the line!

By making people feel welcome! You can have the loveliest house in the world and beyoootiful interiors, perfect lighting, lovely music, but it's the people that create the welcome! I've been in lovely houses but just felt uncomfortable (worried that my kids would break something, not at ease, out of place, c'mon we've been there? I've also been in awful houses whose taste I didn't like at all but felt very welcome as it was tidy and neat and the host & hostess were wonderful). Put your guests at ease by your manner and mood and make sure you have a CLEAN, TIDY relaxing space, you're halfway there already.

Lighting, soft, lots of candles, a sprinkling of not too naff fairy lights on big plants. Alcohol, immediately. Good nosh n a bit of background music.
