Pruning hornbeams

How difficult do you think it would be to keep these hornbeams trimmed to a somewhat shorter height? Do you think it's feasible? Also, how long do they remain bare in the winter?

Super easy to prune the hornbeams at the height you desire .

I would keep a min. height of 36" - they just look better that way.

They loose their leaves at the end of autumn and leaves return in early spring. The branching habit of hornbeams is so tight (if properly pruned ) that they form a screen even without leaves.

Hornbeams are one of my favorite choices for a garden.

E D is right. A garden boundary with another neighbour shouldn’t exceed 2 meters in height. However if the neighbour agrees to some trellis then it shouldn’t be a problem just be aware that if they change their mind or if they move out and you have new neighbours then you could be forced to take it down. Same applies to evergreen hedging which exceeds 2 meters. Jonathan’s suggestion for Portuguese Laurel is a good one tho as it’s very easy to grow and can be easily pruned to shape. Personally I would go for 1 deciduous tree or 2 deciduous shrubs but look up the eventual height and spread. For a tree I might look for a blossom, Prunus sargentii (Sargent’s cherry) looks to be a nice shape for the space. For shrubs there’s lots of choice but have a look at Virburnum oculus ‘Roseum’ (Snowball tree), Philadelphus coronarius (Sweet mock orange), and good old buddliea (butterfly bush). These should grow well with very little care and if they do get out of hand then should be relatively easy to prune back.

I agree with Bespoke Interiors Redbridge UK, definitely put in full height fences, not trees. If the neighbours are problematic (sounds like they're related to mine), the fences will be a safer option than trees that shed leaves/fruit which they might take issue with. Fences also take up less room in a small garden. My garden is only 3m wide, and I have full height fences on both sides. You can paint them or whitewash them if light is an issue, though I have left mine to silver naturally (I just like the look). Get the kids involved in gardening and put raised beds in front of the fences: I am training berry plants up the fences, so they will be green and leafy once the (currently 18 inch tall) plants grow in. Sunflowers are also great to grow along fences and there are plenty of climbing or tall edible plants like sweet peas, maize and tomatoes that are easy for kids to look after (and snack on!). Be careful of getting any evergreen hedges. I have a school one side and have had to ask them to really cut back their leylandii hedge, which has been horribly neglected for years, and it's now getting close to 3.5m tall (guidelines say no more than 2m). It's expensive to cut them back if they have been neglected, so you may be setting yourself up for a big bill down the line.

Hi Gabby, I've chosen trees that will be low maintenance. The Acer silhouette is a narrow tree and grows to about 4 metres which is enough to provide screening without spreading or being too over-powering. I'm not sure about the Arbutus, I think it is going to be a few years before I have to think about pruning but I'm hoping it will grow upwards rather than outwards. If it does need pruning I'll speak to my neighbours and offer to cut their side of it. The other thing I considered was the benefits of evergreen trees, not only do they provide privacy all year round but they also won't cause alot of additional trips to the recycling centre in autumn to dispose of the leaves.

Good questions/comments! On the railings: my preference would have been to restore the brick wall and add low railings then do a planting behind, but there clearly isn’t enough space for that. The reason I lean towards planting over railings is simply that our end of the street is so grey. Probably for reasons of space. At the other end there is a bit more space between the house and the pavement and they’ve got a variety of plantings. Most of the brick walls (except ours) are modern replacements using modern bricks so there’s no continuity either. On the space/bamboo: I’ve seen bamboo and privet (not together) in front of various houses in the area. I think the bamboo (especially the black kind) looks nice but it often gets too tall too quickly (>1m in a season) and suckers. Not that it would have many places to go in front of our house. And I find privet both dull and not massively wildlife friendly. I have been thinking a lot about the space though. If you mean in terms of space to grow out then I think the plus of Hawthorn is that it fills in and seems to respond fairly well to being kept pruned compared to some of the other species that would go into a traditional hedge. I have seen (after much searching) photos of urban hawthorn hedges and I think it will look good (if it thrives). I am planning to angle grind out more than I’d originally thought: I found the gas pipe and cable TV connection so feel more confident now. I was thinking that I could expand up to 30cm, giving me 30cm wide and almost 40cm deep. I was thinking of climbing and/or tall plants on either side of the bay window though! Hadn’t thought of putting them up front: Jasmine would be lovely, need to look up the others! Going to think on this some more!

It is important when pruning to maintain a 'cant'. Simply put, you want the top to be pruned slightly inward (not apparent to the eye) so that light can penetrate the trees from top to bottom and also so the trees don't become top heavy.
