Shower & WC in bedroom

I am about to move to a tiny railway cottage with a downstairs bathroom. I want to add a wc & possibly a shower to one of the 3 bedrooms - I don't want to sacrifice a whole bedroom as I will often have family & friends staying - the good/bad news is the house is a wreck so needs everything done - Any ideas on how to create an unobtrusive toilet & shower whilst still keeping it as a guest bedroom ? I have 2 rooms I can choose from - one is 5m x 2.89 & the other 3.68 x 2.5 so not much space to play with. Ceilings are high 2.8m but I don't think a mezz bed would work - help :-) (for some reason floor plan won't upload from my phone -will try again later on laptop)

You need to be careful when creating a small shower/bathroom. You need plenty of ventilation. Obviously I don't have the plans so I can't see. But it's possible you can build an ensuite into one of the rooms. As the whole place needs redone drainage shouldn't be an issue. You might want to consider a wet room style, that way you don't have to worry about shower screens and trays etc.

Hello,

Whichever room you consider updating with a small shower room, here are some images for your inspiration. The one on the first image is tiny but it works well. The design of it is clean and tidy with plenty of light.

You could also go for a Wetroom if you wish to minimise even more the usage of space. For example I love the style of the Wetroom on the last image.

How do you like that idea? Have you already picked the style you wish your shower room to feature?

I'd suggest creating an idea book on Houzz for bathrooms as a starting point. Just go through photo section and add anything you like and you might start to see a pattern in what you're attracted to. Are you starting from scratch i.e ripping everything out, or are you looking to improve what you have? How do you want it to feel? It would be great if you could upload some pics of the space.

Dear all, If you want to add a bathroom, you have to start there and work everything else round it. The reason for this being that you usually have to feed into the existing soil pipe. The soil pipe in this case is on the left hand outside wall. Without knowing if you can put another one on another outside wall ie the rear, which is probably unlikely, you have no option but to place a bathroom as close to the entrance on the left as possible. Obviously you could change the system in the new bathroom to a macerator style toilet, and technology has come a long way with regards those, but they are not for everyone. It may be possible to change the shape of the kitchen, remove the back entrance and push the front wall back, ( maybe not, as i presume it's instrumental in holding up the mezzanine ) If it were possible in theory:- You could - move the kitchen wall back to make more room in the lounge. Add a bathroom with pocket doors ahead of you when you come in and split the lounge down the middle. You could also have a pocket door entrance from the bedroom to the bathroom jack and jill style. That bedroom would also get the balcony.

Thanks OnePlan. In answer to your question, this is somewhere we're planning on staying 'for life' so with a toddler and another one planned in the very near future we just thought it would be more practical to end-up with a large master with ensuite, good sized second bedroom and two smaller doubles - one each for the children and a guest room. I know it all boils down to individual circumstances, hence the above but it's otherwise a large property (nearly 2000 sq ft) in a lovely plot and area so the only real compromise seems the missing fourth bedroom.

If you intend staying here for a decade then you should make this house work for you and not the next people. I think that since you have already flagged extending in 10 years you should also future proof your plans now. If it were me I would have a bedroom where the current big bathroom is in order to give you the possibility of later extending over the ground floor extension. I would also want a super sized bathroom for my use - I have always believe the person paying the mortgage should have a better bathroom than people who visit three times a year. And I would take the view that when a loft bedroom is later added it won’t matter if one of the four bedrooms is compact. So I offer an alternative.

Thanks for the comments guys - I have tried unsuccessfully to upload a floor plan which would have helped - I think I will have to build a partition wall with a window to keep light in the bedroom end and place the shower /wc near the external window for ventilation - love the wet room in pic 3 James
