Off centre opening in fireplace

We are renovating an 1850s Victorian gothic cottage. It started life as a children's workhouse.

We have taken out the gas fireplaces and want to reinstate the original fireplaces. As you can see when we have stripped back the fireplace upstairs and it was originally off centre (see the original lintel stone). Our builder thinks this is because the flue from downstairs runs to one side.

My husband doesn't like the off centre eas and thinks we should just plaster over and lose the fireplace. I really want to retain it as a feature.

WDUT? Do you think it being off centre is too weird? We will open it back up to the original size of the lintel.
