Tumbled travertine in the kitchen - will the holes collect food?

Hello

I'm thinking about installing tumbled travertine tiles in the floor and backsplash area of my new kitchen.

We are a little bit concerned that the natural holes in the tiles would fill up with scraps of food / sauce and would be difficult to clean. Particularly behind the hob area as I'm a bit of a messy cook and tend to splash.

Do any of you have any experience of using tumbled travertine in the kitchen? How easy do you find this to clean?

When you buy travertine it is normally filled. Regardless, if you are a messy cook I would recommend something else because travertine is also porous and would absorb oils and food splashes. Look for glass tiles or porcelain tiles which would give you a nice impervious surface. Be sure to seal the grout so it can't be stained either.

Travertine does stain and if you're going for one with holes overtime on the floor the edges of the holes will break off and holes enlarge. There are porcelain times that look very similar to travertine, I think it's a better choice if food is likely to spill!

Ahahah! Nowhere near an artist... but I used to score good marks at technical drawings at school! Thank you so much for the floor plans! They are giving me good points to think about! Currently the other half of the island hides an under the counter fridge. However I would prefer not to have a power outlet there... I don't like the idea to drill a hole in the new floor :) Just in case I decide to get rid of the island in future. Also... I have bad news... today the heater engineer told me that the boiler can't be moved into the eaves storage: there isn't enough space. However he came up with a different idea: move it on to the small wall between the stairs and the sink. Ideally I would hide it behind a kitchen cabinet... but I don't plan to get a custom build kitchen... they are just too expensive. So... I can't have a bespoke cabinet. My idea then is to build a short wall there and hide the boiler behind it. If you look at my drawings, you'll see that the wall there is larger than in the original photos... Unfortunately it means that i won't be able to accomodate the refrigerated drawers that you suggested, sorry. I'd like to get rid of the island... unfortunately without it I won't have enough space for all the cabinets and appliances. BTW... I really like your plans! I need to work out how to implement your ideas taking into consideration some of the constrains of the space available.

I had a similar situation in a house I moved into years ago. I did a quick fix of painting all of the walls, woodword and the cupboards the same shade of cream. Sounds a bit OTT but it really knocked back the cupboards, which in all honesty are not something you want to make a feature out of, and created a calmness to the whole space. In your case, I would go for an off white so that the gang plug wires, radiator pipes and covers hiding the wires for the extractor fan etc., are disguised as much as possible -- that will tie in with the palest of the tiles in the splash back, and then you will have a pretty basic colour scheme of a very place colour and the dark worktop, fireplace and floor, which will stand out more. I think you need more storage with doors -- that bookshelf isn't doing anything for the kitchen. If you could get something in there that could hide lots of clutter -- even if just something cheap from IKEA, that would help greatly. Or work something around the filing cabinet that you have? A huge cheap mirror over the fireplace would bounce some light around too. If you don't want to go for undercupboard lighting, and if you have enough plug points, how about some lamps on the worktop, especially at the FF end with a floor standing lamp at the end with the chair. For the table, I would go for a table cloth and reupholster the chairs if they are not to your taste. A new blind in a much fresher colour would be great. Depending on the colour of your filing cabinet (if you use it), I think a petrol blue could add a nice vintage vibe to the chimney breast, and make more of a feature of it. I would try and go down a vintage/slightly industrial route rather than country. You may have some stuff lurking around that you could use, once you have got the base colours right -- currently it just feels a little cluttered and a bit of a mish mash. Best of luck. Hi Kelly, Sounds like an exciting project! We sell a lot of natural stone and a lot of porcelain, and in our experience as long as laid and cared for properly, both can work brilliantly in a family home. Tumbled limestone and travertine can look amazing, especially if you are wanting a more rustic look. If you go for an unfilled travertine, we would highly recommend slurry grouting (filling in the pits and voids) so that it is easier to maintain and clean. It is really important with natural stone to seal it. We recommend sealing once before and once after grouting, with perhaps a third coat around busy thresholds or near ovens/dishwashers etc in the kitchen. The sealer we sell lasts around 5-7 years, so not something you have to do too often. In terms of cleaning, you need to ensure you use natural stone cleaners or pH neutral cleaners, so you don't strip the protective sealer, leaving the stone prone to staining. To clean, it's simply sweeping or vacuuming (without the beaters on) and mopping. The beauty of natural stone is it ages and settles into the home the longer it's laid. Porcelain is really hard wearing, and most don't need sealing, although you can always apply a coat of sealer after laying in order to give added protection and seal grout lines to reduce the chance of staining. We also have wood effect porcelain tiles, which are really realistic if you did want the look of wood. My advice would be to assess where you want to be spending the larger part of your budget, this means deciding what is more important to you, cooking with quality appliances or being able to pull out a larder when realistically you can achieve a lot more, in terms of storage, with a shelved larder and save your money to invest in quality appliances. Be careful with the amount of drawers,pull outs and wire works as these add to the cost of the furniture and can also be retrofitted at a later date should you free up some cash in the future. Keep existing mains supplies where they are and use this as a guideline for the design i.e dishwasher next to sink is an industry standard and work around them. Laminate work surfaces have come an awful long way and so have foil-wrapped doors so consider them to add the look for a little less. Invest in the carcass as this will provide the stability for future door changes if required etc, I would suggest an 18mm minimum with solid backs (18mm) on your base units and a minimum of 8mm backs on the wall units. Finally a good quality, reliable installer will be able to make even the most cost effective kitchen look beautiful so do your homework and speak to people in your area and visit their work (if possible of course!). If you are not careful when installing the kitchen yourself you could end up blowing even more on having it put right. Hi Lee, we always seal any stone to prevent staining and normally recommend waxing (either matt or satin depending on the look you want) a tumbled travertine floor once it has been sealed which can make general maintenance easier. However any floor with a pitted surface will naturally gather dirt more than one with a smooth surface so this comes down to personal preference. Best thing I ever did was to lay travertine throughout my kitchen , hall and downstairs cloakroom. Holes are easily filled and it's so easy to keep clean. In fact it's always clean!!
