Narrow living room. Help!!
Comments (5)As you have said you are about to move, I assume the furniture in the picture is not yours but belongs to the previous owner? Are you buting new furniture or bringing what you already own? Presumably the wood burner would need to be installed on the outside wall? In that case, I would put the tv on the same wall as the wood burner to make seating arrangements easier. Remove the radiator on the right hand side and place a large sofa there, facing the fire and tv. A smaller sofa/large chair backing onto the dining room door, as already in the photo, and a smaller armchair in the bay window, angled toward the fire/tv. As the room is narrow, I would use occasional tables rather than one large coffee table, and have a cosy rug in the middle, with maybe a small ottoman or large footstool. Lastly, I'd use the "dead space" between the hall door and dining room door for a bookcase....See MoreDecorating a long narrow living dining room
Comments (10)As Jen said painting the short end walls in a warm or dark colour helps to correct the room proportions as it brings the walls in. If you're not keen on that I'd just keep the same colour on all 4. The way you've arranged art is good in separate groups as it's breaking up the length of the walls. Have you considered adding a large mirror/s on the long walls? Normally bringing some of the furniture away from the walls helps so you have something in the midddle of the room, is that a footstool or is it attached to the sofa?! I would also add floor and table lamps (regardless of room dimensions) as it will make the room feel bigger at night if some of those corners are lit. You could also add a rug, horizontal stripes are good but something like a diamond geometric would work too...See MoreLong/Narrow new build living room layout?
Comments (2)The internal door naturally divides the space into two. Use this to your advantage and create two zoned areas. It isn’t complicated to extend the TV point so I would be inclined to create a TV viewing area in the smaller zone and a general living area in the larger zone with access out onto the plot. Is this the garden? You can emphasise the two zones by the placement of furniture. For the larger zone move the chair to the middle of the room, where the coffee table is now, facing towards the double doors and move the sofa along the wall closer to the double doors. Move the coffee table in front of the sofa. The wall where the TV is now would be ideal for fitted cupboards and shelving with a picture in the middle to act as a focal point or how about a fireplace with cupboards and shelves either side. The option of a large rug under the coffee table would serve to visually connect everything. You might even get away with a bigger coffee table. For the smaller zone site the TV in the natural recess behind the internal door. I suggest investing in a small sofa to fit along the opposite wall and possibly a small chair or a few bean bags or large cushions under the window. If you invest in a larger coffee table then the existing smaller one could be moved here in front of the new sofa. This arrangement would leave you with a spare chair. Could you find a home for it in a bedroom? This arrangement would still allow free movement around the zones and in and out of the doors....See MoreHelp with layout and furnishings for a narrow long lounge!
Comments (5)A darker cool color (blue, green, black) on the 'head walls' will make the room more 'compact'. Or by painting the dining area a different wall color the room will be cut up in two. Keep the arch the same color as the ceiling though. And yes, some new seating will do wonders! Either a 3/4p sofa and some smaller armchairs or a corner sofa, like below. Look for a slightly longer media cabinet. Just one, so remove the table. Instead of a coffee table, place a side table next to the sofa's and/or some small stools that can double up as seating when needed. Then you might want to consider removing the volant curtains and hang more subtle honeycomb blinds and/or floor to ceiling semi transparent drapes. And remove the rug, it is too small (so is the sheepskin in the image below) and accentuates the narrow. A rug should be (nearly) as wide as the seats on it....See MoreDaniel Eason
