Help in deciding what shape and size floor tiles

Am retiling the whole of my apartment with cream marble looking tiles - can't afford the real thing. My dilemma is square or rectangle? My apartment is 21 foot by 41 foot. Want to give my apartment a feeling of spaciousness. Help and ideas please anyone!

If you want to make it feel bigger I would consider large squares laid in a diamond pattern with a complementary grout

I would try some different neutrals such as Little Greene 'Slaked Lime Dark' or Farrow and Ball 'Light Grey17'. It a lovely bright space and the floor is very warm and quite strong so I would go for a warm stoney neutral that complements the floor and the range. If the paint is more obviously blue of green it will make the floor look even stronger. Little Greene does oil based so I would use that over water based. If you’re really keen on metro tiles, i would choose the skinny white metro tiles but I’d put them in a herringbone pattern. Get a professional to do it and use a resin grout so that they are easier to keep clean. If you want something more practical, then go for big tiles with as little grout as possible. The patterned floor tiles are lovely! Definitely go with those!

@Bryony Pollock - I spoke to 2 of the local estate agents and both thought layout 1 (small bathroom + study) would add more value. Especially as the loft room would have an en-suite bathroom already. The house is in the centre of Cambridge so rooms are at a premium should I ever rent it out. Given current world events the space for a study is now quite high on buyers lists. Certainly in Cambridge where a lot of people commute to London or work on the business/science park. I've modified the design so I don't have to alter the stairs/wall but kept the focus of the back room as a study. It overlooks the garden so will be a nice place to work. @CWD - I've seen a few houses that have cut the front bedroom room in half. Running the soil pipe would be complex/impossible. I could probably add a small en-suite in the alcove against the wall of the middle bedroom should I need/want to in the future. @Anna G - I will have a small closet toilet downstairs and an en-suite in the loft room above. There will be plenty of toilets to pick from. Thanks for all the feedback

Hello. What did you decide on in the end? I have non bevelled metro tiles on the walls and trying to decide if I should do a hex mosaic for the floor, perhaps slightly larger than the penny size.

Are square tiles more fashionable or is there any other reason? Please reply. Thanks

I'm not sure if they're more fashionable? My personal preference is typically rectangular. Tiles laid in a grid pattern means you get a long grout line and leads your eye onwards so makes the space feel bigger. Laying them diagonally means you still get the long grout line but you don't "see" the edges so it feels bigger still. Large tiles are generally much better to create the feeling of space, less grout lines so less busy. It does mean your floor needs to be really level though. You also need to be careful tHat it doesn't become busy by the number of cuts needed for the tiles though!

Large scale tiles would make the space look larger, square would be better than rectangle.

600 x 600's are a common size and it should cost you less to get these done as they'll go down a lot quicker, especially if they're straight rather than diamond pattern, up to you though, diamond pattern would add interest to a pale floor

thank you everyone, i hadn't considered square tiles though the lady in the shop did say a lot of people are going for square at the moment hence my asking whether it was a fashion trend! Will look again at 60x60 tiles.
