Filling Banister Gaps

Hello! I'm planning to put white panelling under my (white or wood) banisters and paint above the banisters. The trouble is, I have 2x 90deg turns and there's a gap in the banisters. Any ideas or thoughts on how to fix it without having to replace the banister? As the top of the panelling is going to look bad with the gap.

Think whatever you do it'll be a little awkward. If you can't find a match to the handrail to fill in the gap then I would probably take off the same amount of rail from the right hand side as is missing from the left so you have an equal gap both sides from the corner.

I'd then take what would naturally be the upright section of the batten part of the panelling all the way up to the same level as where the handrail should be. If needed you could make it thicker than the rest of the panelling since as it's a corner no-one will think anything of it.

If you look at the right hand corner of the photo linked you can see what I mean about using the two upright lengths in the corner - instead of them stopping under the hand rail you'd just continue them up to the where the top line of the rail should be. Once painted to blend in it should look less obvious.

If they're at the same hight, you could have a carpenter mitre the two together but you'd have to get him to match the profile somehow?

Thanks, Bev. We designed and specified the materials, got carpenter to make the frame (and hang!), a glass supplier to measure and supply the glazing and an architectural ironworker to handmake the handles (but you could sibstitute commercially available handles). Any good glass supplier should be able to make the doors if you tell them the hinges you want and say where you want the holes for the handles. I think our gap is around 8ft so design would have to be scaled down. Issues to consider would be type of hinge: opening only one way, both ways and/or if enough space, opening right back on itself as per the bifolds in earlier post). If not fully opening back, plain unframed glass can be a bit of a hazard as you can walk into it. ii) single door or matching pair (symmetrical pair look much easier on the eye but if scaled down you may find you can't walk through half with a tray and need to open both sides which can be a pain. Probably best to scale down the side panels first and go from there. I'd put up with the pain for the looks but others wouldn't! I agree that the clear glass look would look good in your contemporary surroundings, but so would the Crittall and the Japanese screen in other posts. Hope your final choice works out well for you :)

This is always a dilemma. Ideally skirting should have come off before laying floor, but this is easier said than done in old houses as the boards can split and break during removal. If the skirting is white, there is a white beading that can be fitted between the gap. There is also wooden beading that can fill the gap but that doesn’t look as good.

Hi there, It depends on what you have already planted in there and what the mature size of each of these plants is. I can see that you have some phormiums there, for example. These get quite big with time, and so I would not advise that you plant anything permanent around them. Maybe some annuals to fill the gaps that you can grow from seed or buy as plug plants every year untill the phormiums reach maturity and the gaps disappear. So, in a nutshell, look at what you have in there and take their mature size into account so that you dont end up with an ugly looking overcrowded planting scheme and have to dig things out in some years time. Filling gaps when tiling without cutting tiles

Maybe some kind of tile trim? Most of them fit half under the tiles to secure them. Or plastic strips like window fitters use to tidy up gaps. Something like this but tile shops will have a selection.

They appear to be a normal baton on the wall with the banister wood attached to that. So I could fill in the baton part easy enough I guess, I just need to check B&Q for the right shaped banister wood ..... and then hand cut a 45deg angle :P
