Need advice on aspect of conservatory

Considering adding a conservatory from our kitchen through NE facing patio doors. Have been assured that warmth will build up within the conservatory without direct sunshine, but am aware that as living in North of Scotland the conservatory will only have direct sun first thing in the morning and in the evening. Has anyone any experience of NE facing conservatories?

I was in my neighbours and hers was south facing, I lasted 2 minuets and had to get out because I thought I was going to die from the heat lol, we are the west of Scotland. I think north facing will allow you to use it all year round, maybe underfloor heating for the winter months or heating put in when you build it? As it's not built yet have you looked at orangeries? I will attach some pictures

Probably an ideal aspect to extend a kitchen with a glazed building. Good quality Low-e glass will manage any heat loss, decent heating will keep the area nice and warm in the cold weather and you won't have the problem that others have to deal with of overheating in the hot and sunnier weather. An Orangery or Conservatory will bring bucketfuls of light into the room and will make a fantastic area off the kitchen.

I never understood why people don't build their conservatory for year round use. It's all about light and heat control. Automatic sun reflective shades along the roof windows will keep the room from overheating in the summer and even help keep it warm in the winter. Proper wall and ceiling insulation, double or gas permeated triple glazing will keep it comfortable year around with the right heating. Add a wee wood stove in a corner with a simply pipe chimney and you have yourself a lovely winter sun room to brighten your cold winter days. If you live where there is snow, even better. It'll feel like a wee slice of paradise.

Hi Houzzers, My conservatory is a Lean-to type and its 5m * 5m - We have our conservatory roof with insulation and spot lights so no roof blinds needed. We need conservatory blinds on the two sides including the door out to the garden We called in Hillarys as they were doing 50% off blinds and the cost comes up for 2 sides including doors to about £960 for vertical blinds 89mm Acacia fitting inclusive. As it was a lean-to we would have a sloppy fitting and hence wanted a made to measure one rather measuring myself and getting it fitted Does this cost seem ok as we are new to this? Hi Tommy, good choice to ask the forum - you should stay away from architects who are not attentive to your needs... I think that you can work with the size of your current conservatory. Just Re-design the kitchen layout and remove the wall that divide the kitchen from the dining room. Your dinning room could be the where the current conservatory is so that you could take advantage of the light. Make an opening between the sitting room and the current dining area, that way you can have a bigger family room and get the feeling of a cozy space. I'm sure of the conservatory roof but now confused about the window being converted into a door. I think I will give them a call Either way, do they still want us to seek written permission for any alterations? Thanks for your comment and reassurances. It is going ahead next Spring once all planning and building control regs are met. Installing radiators and wood flooring so hopefully it will be ok.
