wood burner or gas fired stove?

I've bought a house with no chimney - do I go for a woodburner or gas-fired stove. Both possible, but expensive. Will a gas fire heat the space as well?

Gas stove will heat instantly ... you will need a balance flue stove and they are really efficient, saying that there is nothing like a real wood burner if you have the time .

We have a wood burner because my partner really wanted one. I wanted gas.
I do love the wood burner, but I think I would prefer a gas fire.
You can't put the wood burner on for 30-60 in the morning while you're having your breakfast, or for an hour before you go to bed. The gas fire is more flexible.
It depends how you will use it I suppose. Ideally I'd have a gas fire in the other room now, but we can't because it uses the same chimney as the wood burner. Boo!!!

Nooo, I can never tell my O/H that he is right! ha ha. Aw, but I love this surround. Sigh. My burner is modern (already bought it) and more contemporary but I love mixing styles. I wasn't sure myself if it would go but I think once it's in and the wall is painted, I will superimpose it on an image and see if it works or not. The main issue was that the burner sticks out so it might look odd. Thanks guys

Hi Miss, If you're installing a wood burner or multi-fuel appliance in your property then you will have to comply with Building Regulations and HETAS. The maximum horizontal run for a chimney on a solid fuel appliance is 200mm or 8". This is because flue gas wants to rise as its hot and having a large horizontal run in a chimney can cause it to stall and not work properly. In terms of installation of a twin wall chimney system in your property it is strongly recommended that the chimney runs internally. This is to do with maintaining the flue gas temperature within the chimney itself to ensure it draws properly. Chimneys which are run externally don't work as effectively and in the colder winter months can cause issues when lighting the stove. Chimneys should always be kept as vertical as possible and if you can have a straight run going all the way through then its considered to be the best chimney to have on a solid fuel appliance, bends and elbows will cause resistance and limit your draw. Thanks very much Math for your comments. Firstly there will be no tv unit in here to worry about...we have a separate snug/ family room. Yes furniture placement is not exact on this pic - I just popped a few sofas in to give the effect!! Our house is surrounded by fields and lovely views especially the side with the bifolds so we wanted as many windows as possible to appreciate that. But I do quite see that we will end up with having sofas in front of the LH window wall. Partly why I thought of adding the built in window seats to add extra seating when required without taking up more useable wall space. As it is fairly wide I'm hoping that pulling the sofas in from the wall will mean it won't look too odd. I think it makes sense to have the fire on the far wall if we can as otherwise we will kind of have two focal points with the windows/ bifolds and then the fire. Unless we put the fire in the corner where you have put the unit? Saw quite a cool one on here last night ... The issue is if we put a wood burner on that end wall how high the flue would have to be and would it look weird if you could see it through the lantern roof? Also what special things would we have to do at the build stage to comply with heat regs etc?

We have a contemporary gas stove in kitchen and a more traditional one in the sitting room ... instant heat

We have 2 gas fires (2 chimneys) & my parents have a wood burner, which they changed from an old gas fire & much prefer it.

The gas fire suits us better because we can put it on briefly if we want, control the temperature, turn off instantly & don't have to worry about stocking up & drying logs. They heat our average sized lounge/ dining room very quickly. The wood burner is lovely when the family is all round and the fire is lit for hours. My parents lounge is big with high ceilings & we often have to open the door as it gets very cosy.

I don't know much about installing either without a chimney but it probably boils down to how often you plan to use it & how long you'd like it to be lit each time.
