Hi Melanie- The house was built in 1927 so I am not sure of the maker and color. My apologies!

You can probably get away with any colour if they're old brick which I suspect they are? If it's really modern red brick, then shades of blue, grey, white, green would work. In terms of painting it grey do you know which way the room faces and how much light it gets? If it has little light there are still a few paler greys that would work. The curtains are very dark so that doesn't help. If you're seeing clients I would probably go for a pale grey ( I don't know what type of clients they are but am assuming a calm, light environment is needed?!) Do you have any existing furniture to put in the room? I only ask as there are thousands of paint colours so it's normally easier to pick wall colour after the sofa etc.

Hello th0m45, Definitely leave them soot and all if you want it to look like a fireplace but you don't want to use it.. (I'd see if you can do) but some people don't want to or can't. This doesn't mean you can't have the aesthetic... Buy a Swan basket freestanding rather than dogs.. that is big enough for the opening.. Then fill with logs.. You could have a slate hearth made to fit and then paint the chimney breast a contrasting colour so it stands out and then add a mirror. You can even add a mantle with two brackets and a large piece of wood as a very make do idea.. Here's a pic of mine as an example.. The original black and white surround was ripped out bashed up and thrown into the recess which I found (heartbreaking).. and in it's place it had a thirties thing put in...before I bought the place! So although it's a working fireplace (now) it doesn't have all of it's original features - I did though open it up and get it working again.. All I need now is a marble surround. or make that two as it's the same in the bedroom!. : ))

Thank you kindly for your helpful advise and colour ideas. Did you use a specific software to make the window colours the same ? we do plan to replace all the windows to be one colour and a modern style (as opposed to Georgian style) - but it's trying to decide on a colour to go with the old/new red brick tones. You mentioned colour bonded - not sure what is meant by this ? The entrance door is too wide for just a single door (2190mm width) so we will need to include a side panel. We plan to have the door a different colour to the Windows to give it more appeal and one that is more modern/contemporary (although I like the blue/style door you've shown but my other half prefers more modern/contemporary style).

Do you have a picture? Just that different colours suit different periods and styles. I find a soft greeny grey looks good with period red brick, as below.
