Window dressing

We are currently renovating our home and have uncovered some beautiful archways. We are struggling however to decide what to do about curtain poles/tracks in the bedrooms or whether to have blinds instead. There are beams near the windows which would mean we might not be able to fully draw back the curtains but I think aesthetically they look more homely than Roman blinds.

Hi Heather, Yes I agree curtains and a pole would look good, blinds will look fiddly and I think you'd need a shaped pelmet to finish them off with the curve or hide it completely. I'd suggest a pole fitted as close to the ceiling as possible (ceiling fixed brackets may help with this) and using a recess bracket fitted to the beam on the RHS and an end cap on the LHS to enable the curtains to be stacked back as far as possible. I think that is a double-track and they have a second, heavier curtain behind it. But even if they don't, I think that is what you should do for versatility and look. They actually have it built into the frame so it is hidden and super sleek, but I think you can achieve this look if you run it along where the angled ceiling meets the wall. I would take a picture of your room and what you like to John Lewis, or another high end store or specialist curtain maker and ask their advice for specifics. I was just trying to give you an idea that I hoped you would like! I'm sorry I can't be super specific, but I think you need to have these custom made to do justice to the room, the view, and to get exactly what you want.

Hi Lauren! I worked on a project with a similar situation! The windows were in a spare bedroom, so ideally they really did need to be covered at night time, however only when people were staying over. We had venetian blinds made for the standard rectangular window, then for the 2 angled windows, we produced a 'shield'. Basically, we got our joiner to make two shields which were templated to the same shape as the window reveals, with a handle in the centre, which then hooked on to the window. So they could be taken up and down as you wish. They were produced in oak and finished the same colour as the rest of the joinery and blinds, with a handle in pewter to match the rest of the ironmongery in the house. Unfortunately I don't have ay photos of the shields, but you can see the window, and the hooks that the shield mounts on to! We found this to be the most simple, unfussy option, and you are still able to see the windows in their full glory. The shields are kept in the cupboard when not being used. I hope this helps! I really think it's a great basis for a lovely bathroom as it is. Here's what I would change to make it into the lovely, relaxed and luxurious space you're aiming for: roman blinds, change the photo frame for framed art with green tones in it, change the mirror for a larger and more elaborate one, find a small cart/trolley that holds towels and the items for daily use that are now on the little planchet. If you have space for that? There are very narrow ones that might work?

I think some beautiful white voile for the day time, mounted on a very discreet ceiling mounted track, such as Silentgliss, which can be bent into the bay. I would then put a bay pole in front of this with whichever curtains go with your scheme, using a blackout lining. I would be careful not to have the curtains gathered too full though as you do not have a lot of space to the left of the window to pull them back. Although unconventional, to overcome this problem, you might want to consider having the curtains made to different widths, ie a shorter left curtain and a wider right curtain so that when they are closed they meet at the corner. On a flat window this would be very conspicuous, but your window is unusual.
